WEEI sports radio on 103.7 in Rhode Island is no more.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Its parent company, Audacy, has sold the station to a local public radio station\u2019s parent company, Ocean State Media, which operates the Public\u2019s Radio in Rhode Island.\u00a0 The reported sales price paid by the public broadcasting company is $4.9 million.<\/p>\n

Ocean State Media \u2014 a not-for-profit \u2014 is sitting on assets in excess of $115 million,\u00a0according to the company\u2019s most recent IRS filing.<\/p>\n

Public\u2019s Radio will acquire the frequency and transmitter.\u00a0 The sports will not be coming over in the deal.<\/p>\n

The acquisition will allow Ocean State Media to replace its existing chaotic five-station network of frequencies in Rhode Island.<\/p>\n

The End of WEEI in Rhode Island<\/p>\n

For local sports fans, it is the end of more than two decades for sports broadcasting in the Providence market. Audacy has been plagued by financial troubles and filed for bankruptcy.<\/p>\n

In 2023, WEEi closed its Rhode Island office.<\/a><\/p>\n

And, in January of 2024, Audacy filed for bankruptcy protection.<\/a><\/p>\n

The transaction is subject to approval by the Federal Communications Commission.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith this move, listeners will no longer need to change channels to continue hearing Ocean State Media as they travel throughout Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts,\u201d said Pam Johnston, President and CEO of Ocean State Media.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce approved, audiences can tune to a single frequency for a clear, high-quality broadcast, advancing our commitment to delivering distinctly local news and information more effectively and efficiently across the region,” added Johnston.\u00a0<\/p>\n

During her tenure as CEO, Johnston has slashed staff at the company, citing financial problems.<\/a><\/p>\n
