Martin Short<\/a>\u2019s flub at Selena Gomez<\/a> and Benny Blanco\u2019s wedding truly takes the cake.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The comedian, 75, revealed that he almost ruined his Only Murders in the Building costar\u2019s special day by accidentally cutting into the couple\u2019s wedding cake before the bride and groom.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe wedding was perfect and it was beautiful and it was in Santa Barbara and all these big tents,\u201d Short explained on Wednesday\u2019s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live. \u201cSo everything was perfect except the night of the reception.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on to describe the event as a \u201cbig, big party\u201d that was complete with a stage, dance floor, and a large seated section at the back of the tent for guests to sit and mingle.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had a group,\u00a0Only Murders in the Building, there was about 12 of us,\u201d Short shared, noting that their costar Paul Rudd<\/a>\u00a0and his wife Julie Yaeger were also in attendance.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a wedding cake by our section, but it was a small wedding cake,\u201d he said. \u201cI just assumed there was a wedding cake for each section in the back.\u201d<\/p>\n

A few hours later, Short noted that Gomez and Blanco still hadn\u2019t cut their wedding cake when Steve Martin announced that he was preparing to leave the event.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe I\u2019d had a cocktail, I don\u2019t know,\u201d Short prefaced. \u201cSo I said, \u2018Oh, Steve, you can\u2019t leave!\u2019 I had a fork in my hand. \u2018You can\u2019t leave yet without a piece of wedding cake!\u2019 And I cut the wedding cake, one side, cut it the other, and then all the people in our group scream: ‘Marty!\u2019 It was the wedding cake.\u201d<\/p>\n

The cameras then cut to an image of a white cake with \u201cjust married\u201d written on top and two very visible slices across its front. \u201cI tried to fix it with a fork,\u201d Short added. \u201cThis was bad. This was about an hour before it was to be presented. And so I turned to Paul Rudd and said, \u2018So, do we just leave?’\u201d<\/p>\n

Thankfully, the wedding coordinator was called in to handle the situation.\u00a0\u201cThen the chef came out. He was like a [French] guy, [shouting], \u2018What the hell happened here?\u2019\u201d Short recalled.\u00a0\u201cThen they did surgery, but it ended up being like a Hollywood wedding cake and that it was beautiful, but now it had a little work done.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cSteve was so stunned when I did that, he gained color.\u201d<\/p>\n

Host Jimmy Kimmel noted that the repair job on the cake was \u201cnot great,\u201d but managed to do the job.<\/p>\n

Short also tried his best to escape getting in trouble with the newlyweds. \u201cI kept saying, \u2018Guys, we can\u2019t let Selena know!\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cAnd [Steve Martin] said, \u2018Maybe we tell her in a month or so.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

His plan, however, didn\u2019t last long. \u201cAs I was leaving, Selena came by, \u2018Hey, Marty! I heard you tried to eat my cake!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
