At the time, Witherspoon had been attached to star in the adaptation as Amy Elliott Dunne, receiving approval from author Gillian Flynn and shepherding the project through her production company, now called Hello Sunshine. However, once director <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/david-fincher\/\" id=\"auto-tag_david-fincher\" data-tag=\"david-fincher\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Fincher<\/a> came aboard, he decided against casting her in the role.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cDavid sat me down \u2014 and this is not on David \u2014 but David\u2019s like, \u2018You\u2019re totally wrong for this part, and I\u2019m not putting you in it,&#8217;\u201d Reese said, speaking on Wednesday\u2019s episode of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=924VcPepGDg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cLas Culturistas\u201d podcast<\/a>. \u201cI had all these conversations with the writer Gillian Flynn, and she was like, \u2018No, I\u2019d really like you to do it.\u2019 \u2026 But [Fincher] was like, \u2018You\u2019re wrong.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe tricky role ended up going to Rosamund Pike, who led the dark romantic comedy with Ben Affleck. The thriller proved a breakthrough for Pike, who scored her first Academy Award nomination for the film, landing a nod for best actress. The film was also a box office hit; at $369 million worldwide, it ranks as the highest-grossing release of Fincher\u2019s career.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThat was, first of all, an ego check for me,\u201d Witherspoon recalled about her conversation with Fincher. \u201cIt was like, \u2018No, you\u2019re not right for everything.\u2019 And he was right. He was totally right. \u2026 Fincher just killed it. And Rosamund Pike is so diabolical and Ben Affleck is sort of the rube on the other side of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWitherspoon ended up scoring a best actress Oscar nomination that same year anyways, leading the biopic \u201cWild\u201d from her soon-to-be \u201cBig Little Lies\u201d director Jean-Marc Vall\u00e9e.
