Last week, Goldin donated one of her artworks to a\u00a0fundraiser for Palestinian children\u00a0curated by children\u2019s YouTube star Ms. Rachel<\/a>, who has faced criticism for her pro-Palestinian advocacy.<\/p>\n \t According to an internal memo obtained by The Globe and Mail, the Toronto gallery was embroiled in debates over acquiring Goldin\u2019s work in the middle of last year.<\/p>\n The gallery\u2019s modern and contemporary curatorial working committee eventually voted 11-9 against purchasing Goldin\u2019s work, after some members alleged Goldin\u2019s remarks were \u201coffensive\u201d and \u201cantisemitic.\u201d Other members of the committee argued that her works were not antisemitic and that \u201crefusing the work because of the artist\u2019s views was censorship,\u201d the newspaper reported.<\/p>\n The Art Gallery of Ontario is publicly funded and already houses three of Goldin\u2019s works. The work it decided not to acquire, \u201cStendhal Syndrome,\u201d does not relate to her pro-Palestinian activism and was instead acquired by a Vancouver gallery, which has displayed it since November.<\/p>\n Following the debate over Goldin\u2019s work, the director and chief executive of the Toronto gallery, Stephan Jost, outlined a governance review that recommended a \u201creset\u201d on the committee\u2019s acquisition discussions and \u201cclarification\u201d of its members\u2019 responsibilities, according to the Globe and Mail.<\/p>\n In a statement to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency about the resignations, the gallery acknowledged the turmoil over Goldin\u2019s work and said it had engaged an expert to review the meeting.<\/p>\n \u201cPolitical views are never intended to be part of the process. In this instance, personal political views did surface,\u201d an AGO spokesperson said. \u201cAs a result, the AGO engaged an independent governance expert to review matters relating to that meeting. The AGO takes these learnings seriously and has reset to ensure that such discussions are focused on an artwork\u2019s alignment to the AGO\u2019s acquisition criteria, are healthy and productive, and welcome multiple perspectives.\u201d<\/p>\n
