\n\tSam Raimi<\/a>, who helmed Sony\u2019s \u201cSpider-Man<\/a>\u201d film franchise from 2002 to 2007, recently told ScreenRant<\/a> that his versions of Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson, played by Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, \u201chave gone elsewhere\u201d with little hope of returning to the big screen.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cStan Lee\u2019s great character \u2014 that a bullpen of writers in New York at Marvel had come up with stories for \u2014 he created the character, but so many people contributed, so many artists, that for a brief time I was handed the torch to carry on after 40 years of \u2018Spider-Man\u2019 comics,\u201d Raimi said. \u201cAnd then after my three movies, I handed the torch off to someone else. And I think they\u2019ve got to keep running with the storyline and the audience that is now following the torchbearer.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe \u201cEvil Dead\u201d director explained that a new generation of superhero fans is \u201creally into\u201d the new \u201cSpider-Man\u201d era led by Tom Holland<\/a>. He added that it wouldn\u2019t \u201cbe right for me to go back and try and resurrect my version of this story\u201d after making way for another group of filmmakers to step in. <\/p>\n

\n\tRaimi\u2019s first \u201cSpider-Man\u201d debuted in 2002 and was followed by two sequels in 2004 and 2007, respectively. In 2012, Marc Webb took over the franchise with \u201cThe Amazing Spider-Man,\u201d which saw Andrew Garfield step into the titular role. Webb\u2019s sequel, \u201cThe Amazing Spider-Man 2,\u201d followed in 2014.<\/p>\n

\n\tMarvel Studios reclaimed Spider-Man in 2016, inserting Tom Holland into the role with the release of \u201cCaptain America: Civil War.\u201d Holland got his first standalone film in 2017 with \u201cSpider-Man: Homecoming,\u201d followed by 2019\u2019s \u201cSpider-Man: Far from Home\u201d and 2021\u2019s \u201cSpider-Man: No Way Home.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe latest \u201cSpider-Man\u201d film, \u201cBrand New Day,\u201d which recently wrapped production<\/a>, swings into theaters on July 31. \u201cShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings\u201d director Destin Daniel Cretton helms the film.
