\n\tSundance project:\u00a0\u201cRelic\u201d writer-director Natalie Erika James\u2019 body horror film<\/a> \u201cSaccharine,\u201d which was acquired by IFC and Shudder shortly before the festival premiere. <\/p>\n \n\t\u201c\u200aThis movie is not meant to be comfortable,\u201d says Francis, the afternoon after the midnight premiere of \u201cSaccharine\u201d at the festival. \u201c\u200aI could feel in the room that people were moved and disturbed \u2014 and that to me is what art\u2019s about.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tThe lead actress was reflecting on the audience\u2019s audible reactions to the film<\/a>\u2019s moments of body horror. Francis stars as a young lovestruck medical student who starts consuming human ashes as part of a weight loss craze, and is soon haunted by the dead man\u2019s presence.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tLexie Moreland\/WWD<\/p>\n \n\t\u201c[James] so astutely portrays, unpacks, challenges, covertly subverts everything about what it\u2019s like to have an eating disorder, to be stuck in a shame spiral, to be under the guise of compulsion,\u201d says Francis, crediting James\u2019 use of horror to comment on body dysmorphia and societal expectations, in the vein of films like \u201cThe Substance.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n \n\tThe actress, who\u2019s based in Los Angeles, was excited to check Sundance off her bucket list during the festival\u2019s last year in Park City.
