Natalie Portman is not pleased with the 2026 Oscar nominations. <\/a><\/p>\n

While promoting her new film \u201cThe Gallerist\u201d at the Sundance Film Festival<\/a> on Saturday, Portman, 44, called out the Academy for snubbing multiple female-directed movies.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo many of the best films I saw this year were made by women,\u201d the actress told Variety.<\/a> \u201cYou just see the barriers at every level because so many were not recognized at awards time. Between \u2018Sorry Baby\u2019 and \u2018Left-Handed Girl\u2019 and \u2018Hedda\u2019 and \u2018The Testament of Ann Lee.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, extraordinary films this year that I think a lot of people are enjoying and loving,\u201d she continued, \u201cbut are not getting the accolades they deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n

Portman also noted how hard it is to get a movie made even before award season.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven when you pass the barriers of getting your financing, which is harder, getting into festivals, which is harder. Every step of the road is harder, and then you\u2019re out and it\u2019s great, and then it also doesn\u2019t get the attention,\u201d she explained. \u201cWe have a lot of work to do still.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut joyfully, with a lot of joy, working with each other and it\u2019s a very special process to be in community with women on set,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Portman collaborated with a female director, Cathy Yan, on \u201cThe Gallerist,\u201d which also stars Jenna Ortega, Sterling K. Brown, Da\u2019Vine Joy Randolph, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Charlie XCX and Zach Galifianakis. Portman is also a producer on the film.<\/p>\n

The Academy mostly ignored female directors when the 2026 Oscar noms were announced on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Chlo\u00e9 Zhao (\u201cHamnet\u201d<\/a>) is the only woman up for Best Director.<\/p>\n

In the Best Picture race, \u201cHamnet\u201d is the only female-directed project of the ten nominees. <\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Best International Feature Film category only has one entry directed by a woman: Kaouther Ben Hania\u2019s \u201cThe Voice of Hind Rajab.\u201d<\/p>\n

Portman is up for a 2026 Oscar for co-producing the film \u201cArco,\u201d which is up for Best Animated Feature.<\/p>\n

She previously won an Academy Award for Best Actress for \u201cBlack Swan,\u201d directed by Darren Aronofsky, in 2011. Portman was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress for \u201cCloser\u201d in 2005 and Best Actress for \u201cJackie\u201d in 2017.<\/p>\n

Portman has a history of standing up for women at award shows. <\/p>\n

At the 2020 Oscars<\/a>, she wore a gold dress with a black cape that was embroidered with the names of the\u00a0female directors\u00a0who were ignored by the Academy that year, including \u201cLittle Women\u201d director Greta Gerwig.<\/p>\n

In 2018, Portman infamously called out the Golden Globes for excluding females in the Best Director category while she presented the award alongside Ron Howard. <\/p>\n
