Retired CI\u00c9 workers will stage a protest in Galway today, as part of an ongoing campaign to secure improvements to their pension payments.<\/p>\n
They said the absence of an increase in their pensions since 2008 means many retired staff are experiencing financial hardship.<\/p>\n
The group is calling on the Department of Transport to expedite matters so that planned increases can be sanctioned.<\/p>\n
Their concerns centre on former staff who are part of a 1951 scheme, and who do not qualify for the State old age pension.<\/p>\n
Retired Dublin Bus, Iarnr\u00f3d \u00c9ireann and Bus \u00c9ireann staff are taking part in the demonstration.<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for the Department of Transport said it was engaging with CI\u00c9 and the Department of Public Expenditure on “the next steps” to progress an agreement on the matter, which was reached with unions and management in May of last year.<\/p>\n
This includes a review of statutory instruments and the matter of increases to pension payments.<\/p>\n
The department said it is endeavouring to finalise this as soon as “necessary approvals” are finalised.<\/p>\n
CI\u00c9 stopped increasing pension payments in line with wage increases to staff during the recession and had cited actuarial advice that it could not sustain pension increases, after salary increases resumed in 2016.<\/p>\n
