\n\tThe UK\u2019s National Theatre<\/a> has added star wattage to its 2026 season with luminous names such as Cate Blanchett<\/a> (T\u00e1r, Carol), Sandra Oh<\/a> (Killing Eve, Grey\u2019s Anatomy), Nina Hoss<\/a> (Hedda) and Lorraine Toussaint<\/a> (The Equalizer, Orange Is the New Black) all set to perform on London\u2019s Southbank this year.<\/p>\n

\n\tBlanchett, a two-time Oscar winner, is returning to the flagship artistic venue, having made her debut there in 2019 in Martin Crimp\u2019s\u00a0When We Have Sufficiently Tortured Each Other, directed by Katie Mitchell.<\/p>\n

\n\tThis time Blanchett reunites with Hoss, her\u00a0T\u00e1r\u00a0co-lead, and\u00a0Black Doves\u00a0breakthrough Ella Lily Hyland in the world premiere of\u00a0Electra \/ Persona,\u00a0which runs on the National\u2019s Lyttelton stage\u00a0in the fall. It\u2019s being directed by Benedict Andrews, who drew extraordinary performances from Gillian Anderson, Ben Foster and Vanessa Kirby in a celebrated 2014 Old Vic revival of Tennessee Williams\u2019s\u00a0A Streetcar Named Desire.<\/p>\n

\n\tFor this new work, Andrews has forged Sophocles\u2019\u00a0Electra\u00a0with Ingmar Bergman\u2019s 1966 gripping classic,\u00a0Persona, a film that starred\u00a0Liv Ullmann and Bibi Andersson playing, respectively, a famous theatre actress, inexplicably struck mute, who is cared for by a young nurse.<\/p>\n

\n\tAndrews says that the play will interrogate the inner life of an actress \u201cand query how grief can make us strangers to ourselves.\u201d The production\u2019s music has been composed by Oscar-winning composer Hildur Gu\u00f0nad\u00f3ttir\u00a0(Joker, T\u00e1r).<\/p>\n

\n\tBlanchett\u2019s ramping up her stage appearances having led an acclaimed revival last\u00a0\u00a0spring of Chekhov\u2019s\u00a0The Seagull,\u00a0directed by Thomas Ostermeier at the Barbican Theatre. There\u2019s much chatter about\u00a0The Seagull\u00a0heading to New York with Blanchett and the Barbican company in 2027.<\/p>\n

\n\tOh is making her National debut leading a new adaptation of Moli\u00e8re\u2019s\u00a0The Misanthrope\u00a0from the pen of Martin Crimp. The production will be directed by NT artistic director Indhu Rubasingham and will play in the Lyttelton Theatre from June 16-August 1.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe big deal about this particular\u00a0Misanthrope\u00a0is that it\u2019s a gender reimagining with\u00a0Moli\u00e8re\u2019s infamous protagonist, the misanthropic Alceste, now called Alice, a best-selling novelist who, as Crimp via Moli\u00e8re would have it, \u201cdespises the hollow contemporary mantras of kindness and respect. But the bolder she becomes in speaking out, the more colleagues avoid her ,and the more her personal relationships begin to fracture.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOh, with her quicksilver wit, was born to play Alice. She\u2019s such a great actress, and I can say that having watched every reel, practically, of her screen work including every episode she did of\u00a0Killing Eve\u00a0and every single episode she shot of\u00a0Grey\u2019s Anatomy for 10 seasons. Hers were memorable shows in a way that the subsequent episodes have not been.<\/p>\n

\n\tRubasingham directed an earlier version of Crimp\u2019s\u00a0The Misanthrope\u00a0over two decades ago at the Chichester Festival Theatre. She tells Deadline that it\u2019s \u201ca real joy to come back to this play.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe artistic chief adds that she\u2019s \u201cthrilled Sandra Oh, who I have known and admired for a long time, is coming to join me at the National.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPerforming alongside Oh will be Paul Chahidi (The Night Manager Season 2) and Abigail Cruttenden (Ragdoll).<\/p>\n

\n\tIt\u2019s also a big deal, in my book, that\u00a0Toussaint, a much garlanded stage actress, will join Letitia Wright (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) in the previously announced revival of Tracey Scott Wilson\u2019s\u00a0newsroom thriller\u00a0The Story, directed by NT associate artist Clint Dyer. Aliyah Odoffin (All My Sons), Wilf Scolding\u00a0(Andor)\u00a0and Ashley Thomas (Hostage) also star.<\/p>\n

\n\tPerformances for The Story run from August 27-September 3 on the mighty Olivier stage.<\/p>\n
