Will SEN boss Craig Hutchison be adding Nine\u2019s radio assets to his burgeoning media empire \u2013 and for a bargain price to boot?<\/p>\n

The answer could come as early as this week.<\/p>\n

Staff at Nine Entertainment are expecting a sale announcement any day now.<\/p>\n

According to the The Australian (subscription required<\/a>), Hutchison\u2019s Sports Entertainment Group (SEG) \u2013 up against two rival consortiums \u2013 is the frontrunner to snap up Nine\u2019s talk stations, which include Sydney\u2019s 2GB, Melbourne\u2019s 3AW, Brisbane\u2019s 4BC and Perth\u2019s 6PR \u2013 and for substantially less than the rumoured $50 million price tag.\u00a0Try $28 million.<\/p>\n

His reported bid partner is Viburnum, which holds a majority stake in the Global Traffic Network, owner of traffic report provider ATN.<\/p>\n

In September last year, Hutchison\u2019s Sports Entertainment Group officially completed the acquisition of Melbourne sports station RSN 927.<\/a><\/p>\n

The deal \u2013 worth $3.25 million \u2013 made SEN the sole audio broadcaster of racing in Victoria, and added to Hutchison\u2019s stable of AM stations, following the purchase of Brisbane\u2019s 4KQ <\/a>and Sydney\u2019s 2CH.<\/a><\/p>\n

Obviously industry speculation is just that, and there are some ownership issues that impact a deal like this. It does, however, demonstrate that Hutchison is a major player with financial clout behind him.<\/p>\n

History would tell us that many a media empire was built on less.<\/p>\n
