A certain strain of twangy, countrified indie rock has gotten a whole lot of attention over the past few years, and it’s not a uniquely American phenomenon. Consider the case of the prolific Norwich, UK band Brown Horse, who have only been around for a few years but who have already released two albums, 2024’s Reservoir<\/a> and last year’s All The Right Weaknesses<\/a>. They’ve got a lived-in, warmly ragged sound that fits in nicely alongside all their American contemporaries, with just a hint of old-school UK indie depression in there. Their third album is already on the way.<\/p>\n

This spring, Brown Horse will release their new LP Total Dive. Their lead single is “Twisters,” an amiable midtempo chug that goes hard on pedal steel and Neil Young-style fuzz excursions. Leeds musician Neve Cariad sings backup on this song and on most of the other Total Dive tracks. Bandleader Nyle Holihan has a creaky, weary voice and a gift for minute observations: “Hear the crackle of a coffee jug\/ Hear the sound of a closing door\/ Your back turned, smoking a cigarette\/ Watching a pot that will never boil.”<\/p>\n

Shortly after Total Dive comes out, Brown Horse will head out on their first-ever North American tour.
