Tool<\/a> fans have been known to obsess over the band\u2019s setlists, often wondering why the band won\u2019t perform certain songs from its early catalog. In a new interview, frontman Maynard James Keenan<\/a> says one reason is because he finds the lyrics to some older tunes to be regrettable.<\/p>\n

The singer was the guest on a new episode of Jackass star Steve-O\u2019s podcast Steve-O\u2019s Wilde Ride!, when the host began discussing the differences between the singer\u2019s bands Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer. Steve-O mentioned that he asked AI to describe each band, and it came back with Tool as \u201creverent,\u201d A Perfect Circle as \u201cromantic,\u201d and Puscifer as \u201cabsurd.\u201d<\/p>\n

Keenan contested the AI summation by responding, \u201cYeah, I don\u2019t know about that\u2026 reverence for fist-f**king?,\u201d amusingly referencing \u201cStinkfist\u201d from Tool\u2019s 1996 album \u00c6nima, eliciting raucous laughter from Steve-O and his co-host Skinny Vinny.<\/p>\n

The singer went on to say, \u201cThere\u2019s some old Tool songs that I don\u2019t like playing them because I feel like I failed them. They\u2019re popular songs, but I was trying to make a joke, and it was a dumb joke, and I should\u2019ve just moved on\u2026 I feel like the lyrics don\u2019t hold up under scrutiny.\u201d<\/p>\n

When pressed by Steve-O for an example of a specific song, Maynard mentioned \u201c4\u00b0\u201d from Tool\u2019s 1993 debut album Undertow. \u201cThe way I wrote it\u2026 I was trying to fucking make a butt sex joke and it was dumb. The song\u2019s beautiful, what those guys did musically is great and I think maybe the melody\u2019s a good melody but the words are just dumb. I don\u2019t know what the fuck I was thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n

He then quipped, \u201cSo [I thought to myself] don\u2019t do that again\u2026 fix it and make a song like \u2018Stinkfist\u2019,\u201d prompting Steve-O to conclude, \u201cI think \u2018Stinkfist\u2019 is quite reverent.\u201d<\/p>\n

For now, Keenan\u2019s attention is on Puscifer, who\u2019s new album Normal Isn\u2019t arrives February 6th. The band will embark on a headlining North American tour<\/a> in support of the LP beginning in late March, with tickets available here<\/a>.<\/p>\n
