The alpine skiers, who have represented Israel for many years, know only a few words of Hebrew (shalom, ma nishma, tov, toda) and visit Israel about once a year \u2014 but they feel Israeli when they represent the Jewish state and wear the blue and white flag on their ski suits.<\/p>\n<p>Their father, Peter Sz\u0151ll\u0151s, who manages the pair, introduced them to snow from the moment they were born. I also really love art.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It will not surprise you that her favorite Disney princess is Elsa. \u201cI would sing \u2018Let It Go\u2019 at home, it\u2019s still on my playlist. It was very stressful not being able to stay in one place for a long time. Now I can say it was worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"r1G11f5ixFIbg\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ynetnews.com\/culture\/article\/s1qq6rtat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Noa realized her Olympic dream was coming true in 2020<\/a>, when she already represented Israel and competed in the Youth Olympic Games. She won two medals, Israel\u2019s first ever at the Winter Youth Olympics \u2014 silver in the combined event and bronze in alpine skiing. \u201cThat competition made me realize I can do it on the senior stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barney says: \u201cAs a child I did not see skiing as a dream, I did it out of habit, like a job. It started somewhere around age 13, I found I was good, winning various competitions. Over time I realized I could go further and do more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When your father told you that you were going to represent Israel, how did you react?<\/p>\n<p>Barney: \u201cI was not surprised. Dad coached quite a few Israeli athletes and we met many of them as kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Noa: \u201cI thought it was nice to connect to Israel this way, to learn about a new culture, a new country. In my last year as a youth competitor they already understood I wasn\u2019t really from Israel. My abilities surprised them then, but now everyone knows me by my name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But representing Israel brings up the question of whether you are Jewish, doesn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n<p> Noa: \u201cYes, it always comes with the question \u2018Why Israel? Do you have family there?\u2019 Then I say my father is Jewish. I get curious and interested reactions about that. My grandmother\u2019s mother was in Auschwitz and my father\u2019s grandfather died on the train on the way there, he was in one of the labor camps. I feel very connected to my Jewish roots.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You have a very common name in Hebrew, do you know its meaning? <\/p>\n<p>Noa: \u201cSince I was young I understood I have a name in Hebrew, and yes, its meaning is funny. It\u2019s about movement, energies. That name fits me perfectly. I love it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barney: \u201cI have no idea what my name means, I only know our parents chose us Jewish names.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Do you observe Jewish holidays at home? <\/p>\n<p>Noa: \u201cNot really. I know about Passover and Rosh Hashana.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Do you visit Israel often? <\/p>\n<p>Noa: \u201cNot often, because we are busy with our schedule. We come for checkups and dry\u2011land training. It\u2019s a very beautiful country. I love the hummus; that\u2019s something you don\u2019t get in Austria or Hungary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barney: \u201cThe food in Israel is great. I love the seafood, it\u2019s all very fresh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Have you ever met athletes from other countries who treated you badly because you represent Israel? <\/p>\n<p>Barney: \u201cIt hasn\u2019t happened, but I did meet an athlete from Iran in the Olympic Village. I exchanged pins with some athletes from around the world, and when it was our turn to exchange pins he saw the Israeli flag, turned around, said \u2018Oh no\u2019 and left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Noa: \u201cI wanted to trade a pin with one of the Iranian coaches and he asked me if I was sure about that, if I was serious. He gave me his pin, I tried to give him the one from Israel and he refused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The siblings no longer train together since turning professional. He finished sixth in the combined downhill, the same ranking achieved two decades earlier by figure skaters Galit Chait and Sergei Sakhnovski.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt amazing after that result, and then I learned I had tied the best placement, which was also great,\u201d Barney says with a smile. \u201cThose were really good Games for me. Unfortunately, this year they canceled that event; it\u2019s no longer in the Olympic program. It will be harder for me to achieve that ranking again, but I will do my best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve grown a lot, especially mentally, in these four years,\u201d Noa says. \u201cI was very tense and did not compete the way I wanted. This time I hope I can ski at full ability and achieve the result I want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have supported the family from a young age and have a close relationship,&#8221; Yael Arad, chair of the Israeli Olympic Committee, said. &#8220;We support them professionally and financially. Winter sports do not receive much exposure in Israel, but we are working consistently with the winter sport federations, skating, skiing and sledding.
