These days, there’s no shortage of devices and gadgets that can level up your running recovery game. Want to sleep better? Consider a smart ring<\/a>. Want to better understand how your body is handling your training load? A smartwatch<\/a> can help. And if you’re suffering from aching muscles? Well, a pair of compression boots<\/a> can help to keep your legs feeling fresh.<\/p>\n

The problem is, compression boots aren’t cheap. Most of them will set you back well over \u00a3500 \u2014 except from the Pulsio boots<\/a>. These guys retail for a pretty reasonable \u00a3299 \u2014 but do they live up to more premium devices? As a 12-time marathon runner, I tried them to find out.<\/p>\n

Pulsio Compression<\/p>\n

The Pulsio boots function like any other pair of air compression boots in that they apply pressure to different points on the legs and feet, theoretically helping to improve blood flow and reducing inflammation from small muscle tears. Think of them like an air massage for your legs. <\/p>\n

The sleeves themselves feel just as durable as more premium options I’ve tested from the likes of Normatec and Therabody, and are easy to wipe down.<\/p>\n

Unlike those more premium boots, however, which have separate air pumps built into the thigh of each leg sleeve, the Pulsio uses a more basic air compressor\/console which attaches to hoses that connect to the boots. It’s all easy enough to set up, and the boots are handily labelled left and right. The only drawback \u2014 and it’s a fairly big one \u2014 is that the console needs to be connected to a mains power supply (via the supplied cable) in order to power it. There’s no way to charge the console and use it without the mains. This does somewhat limit the boots’ use and portability, as you’ll need to be sat near a power supply to use them, and it means you’ve got two cables to worry about instead of one. If this is a drawback, Pulsio do offer a Pro version<\/a> for \u00a3399 with a mains-free console, which gives you up to three hours of usage.<\/p>\n

On the control unit, you can change the pressure, mode and length of your session. The unit itself is nothing fancy; you’re getting a basic black and white display screen, with no Bluetooth compatibility or companion app. But that’s not always necessary.<\/p>\n

That said, I would have liked the ability to pause the device mid-session, for occasions such as the doorbell going with a delivery, rather than having to stop the session completely. To that point, while the leg sleeves do deflate fairly quickly once you stop the session, it does take a few seconds for them to go down enough to wriggle your legs out. So if the doorbell does go, don’t expect to go sprinting to the door.<\/p>\n

Alongside the boots and air chamber\/control unit, you also get a free storage case (more on this below), plus UK\/EU power adaptor heads.<\/p>\n

Settings<\/p>\n

The Pulsio boots offer three modes: Sequence (default), Circulation and Combination. The modes affect how and where pressure is distributed among the boots\u2019 four chambers: the feet, lower calves, upper calves and thighs. <\/p>\n

Circulation mode inflates each chamber from foot to thigh, one after the other, until all four chambers are fully inflated. Then, all four will decompress. This is the setting I use the most, as it’s better for post-workout recovery, maximising blood circulation and removing lactic acid.<\/p>\n

Sequence mode inflates and deflates each chamber separately up to your desired pressure. This is best for stimulating the muscles pre-workout, as it limits the duration of pressure applied at one time. As someone who is limited on time, especially pre-session, I can’t say I’ve spent a great deal of time using Sequence mode, but it’s a good feature to have.<\/p>\n

Finally, combination mode provides, as the name suggests, a combination of both, alternating between improved circulation and targeted muscle stimulation.<\/p>\n

There are also seven intensity levels to choose from, starting at 60mmHg and maxing out at 200mmHg. Considering the boots cost less than \u00a3299, that’s pretty impressive \u2013 and way above the industry standard of 120mmHg. A word of warning, though: if you’ve not used compression boots before, I would start off with a lower pressure and work your way up. With 200mmHg, you get quite a tight squeeze, which can be a bit uncomfortable \u2013 especially if you’ve just done a hard session. I tend to operate the boots just below this, around 180mmHg.<\/p>\n

\"a<\/p>\n

Time wise, sessions are limited to 20, 25 or 30 minutes. I would have liked some slightly lengthier options, as it means you need to start the process again if you\u2019re wanting to use the boots for more than half an hour. They’re also relatively noisy \u2013 not to the extent that you can’t watch television or read a book, but it is slightly distracting and I’m not sure I’d want to get them out in the office. <\/p>\n

Portability<\/p>\n

A lot of compression boots claim to be \u2018portable\u2019 or otherwise suitable for taking on trips with you. But in my experience, most of them are still pretty bulky and their accompanying carry cases (which often come at an extra cost) would take up the entire contents of your hand luggage if travelling by air. The Pulsio Boots, however, are one of the only truly portable options I’ve tested. The carry case is relatively small and they actually pack down impressively well. <\/p>\n

The only thing that stops them from being truly portable is that lack of a wireless console.<\/p>\n

\"aRW verdict<\/p>\n

If you’re tempted by air therapy but find your eyes watering at the price of a premium pair, the Pulsio boots are a solid alternative for around \u00a3500 less. While the lack of mains-free connection is frustrating, and the device’s modes and session lengths are more limited, they offer a pressure range that punches above their price tag and are genuinely quite portable. <\/p>\n
