\n Iran is ready to participate in \u201cfair and just\u201d nuclear talks with the United States amid rising tensions<\/a> between the two nations, but will not be dictated to, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Friday.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cWe are under no circumstances willing to accept dictation or imposition,\u201d Araghchi said at a press conference during a visit to Istanbul alongside Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. \u201cNevertheless, Iran is ready to participate in any diplomatic process that is meaningful, logical and fair.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n It is not clear when or in what format the potential talks could occur. Araghchi said no meeting with the US has been arranged while cautioning that such talks cannot be \u201cconducted under threat.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n He also ruled out the possibility of Tehran engaging in negotiations about what he called Iran\u2019s \u201cdefensive capabilities,\u201d as well as its missile programme. \u201cI believe no country is prepared to compromise on its own security or its national defence,\u201d he said.\n <\/p>\n

\n The announcement follows renewed threats<\/a> from Washington, with US President Donald Trump urging Iran on Wednesday to sign what he called an \u201cequitable\u201d nuclear deal or face another potential US military strike.\n <\/p>\n

\n Trump said Thursday he\u2019s been having conversations with Iranian leaders and is planning on further discussions.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI have had and I am planning on it,\u201d he said when asked about the status of his conversations with Tehran. \u201cWe have a lot of very big, very powerful ships sailing to Iran right now, and it would be great if we didn\u2019t have to use them.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Trump did not say to whom he spoke, but he did describe the message he conveyed. \u201cI told them two things,\u201d Trump said. \u201cNumber one, no nuclear. And number two, stop killing protesters.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Thousands of demonstrators were killed during recent anti-government protests<\/a> in Iran after a heavy clampdown by the Iranian regime.\n <\/p>\n

\n Araghchi said Friday that Iran is \u201cready to re-enter the nuclear negotiations\u201d while reiterating Tehran\u2019s long-standing position that his country\u2019s nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThe necessary preliminaries must first be established \u2013 concerning the format, the venue and the agenda of the discussions,\u201d he added.\n <\/p>\n

\n During Araghchi\u2019s trip to Istanbul, Turkey said it was ready to \u201cassume a facilitating role\u201d between Iran and the US to help de-escalate tensions.\n <\/p>\n

\n The offer was made in a call between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian, the Turkish presidency said.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThe leaders discussed Turkey-Iran bilateral relations and the escalating military tensions in the region,\u201d the Turkish presidency said in a statement Friday.\n <\/p>\n

\n On arrival to Istanbul, Araghchi accepted that regional issues are \u201cextremely serious at the moment and we are facing major challenges.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThe goals stated by the United States and others make it necessary for us to hold closer consultations, review regional developments and coordinate our positions,\u201d Araghchi told reporters.\n <\/p>\n
