In Paris these were not simply coffee houses, there was always wine, most served food\u2014and some offered entertainment. By 1886, when Vincent moved to the French capital to stay with his brother Theo, caf\u00e9s had become a central part of modern life and an attractive subject for avant-garde painters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">For Van Gogh, a single man in Paris, caf\u00e9s represented places to drink, eat or read a newspaper. But above all, they were congenial places to hang out with his fellow artists. Living at Theo\u2019s apartment in Montmartre, Vincent was plunged into the centre of a dynamic social scene.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The culture of caf\u00e9s is the lively subject for an exhibition opening shortly: Caf\u00e9 Society: Art and Sociability in Belle Epoque Paris. With more than 50 paintings by a wide range of turn-of-the-century artists, its first stop is the <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/ordrupgaard.dk\/en\/udstillinger\/cafe-society-cafe-society-art-and-sociability-in-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ordrupgaard<\/a> museum, on the outskirts of Copenhagen, Denmark (6 February-31 May). The show will then go to America: to the <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dixon.org\/caf\u00e9-society-art-and-sociability-in-paris-1855-1914\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dixon Gallery and Gardens<\/a>, Memphis, Tennessee (18 June-6 September) and the <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/joslyn.org\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Joslyn Art Museum<\/a>, Omaha, Nebraska (26 September-17 January 2027).<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The presentation in Denmark includes three Van Gogh paintings of Parisian caf\u00e9s. The two works from European museums are not going to America. That leaves Restaurant Rispal at Asni\u00e8res (from the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri), which will be shown in Omaha. The painting is not going to Memphis, because the Nelson-Atkins wants to display it during the football World Cup in the city in June-July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\"><a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musee-orsay.fr\/en\/artworks\/la-guinguette-montmartre-143\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">La Guinguette \u00e0 Montmartre<\/a> (October 1886) was presumably an establishment where Van Gogh regularly enjoyed a drink, close to Theo\u2019s apartment in Rue Lepic. A guinguette is a simple rural caf\u00e9 or tavern with outdoor seating. Van Gogh\u2019s outdoor seating might have been on far left, now occupied by an extension<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The location of Van Gogh\u2019s guinguette remains uncertain, although the restaurant La Bonne Franquette in Rue des Saules, five minutes\u2019 walk from Theo\u2019s apartment, now claims the honour. If indeed it is the place, then the outdoor seating area has been replaced by a 20th-century extension. Bloch, 2015.13.10)<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\"><a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/blobnamawordpresscicd.blob.core.windows.net\/wpmediablob\/FPC\/downloads\/articles\/736_van-Gogh_Restaurant-Rispal-at-Asnieres_NAMA_French-Paintings_and_Pastels_Marcereau-DeGalan.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Restaurant Rispal at Asni\u00e8res <\/a>(May-June 1887) was painted in the northern suburbs of Paris, on the banks of the Seine. The Rispal restaurant was probably located at 117 Quai de Seine (now Quai Aulagnier), near the Pont de Clichy, although the site has now been replaced by a dual carriageway and modern blocks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">In the late spring and early summer of 1887 Van Gogh sometimes worked in Asni\u00e8res with his artist friend Paul Signac. Years later Signac recalled: \u201cWe painted on the riverbanks of the river, ate in a guinguette and returned on foot to Paris\u201d, a journey of just over an hour. Van Gogh walked \u201cwaving his freshly painted size-30 canvas\u201d. Restaurant Rispal at Asni\u00e8res is in fact the largest of Van Gogh\u2019s Asni\u00e8res pictures so it could have been the one referred to, although it is slightly smaller than a size-30 canvas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">On another occasion Signac recalled that Van Gogh would finish his day in a caf\u00e9: \u201cHaving no real home of his own, he would take his seat on the terrace of a caf\u00e9. Le Tambourin was a lively haunt known for its tables with tambourine-shaped tops.
