{"id":266604,"date":"2026-01-31T05:19:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-31T05:19:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/266604\/"},"modified":"2026-01-31T05:19:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-31T05:19:07","slug":"elise-mertens-zhang-shuai-win-australian-open-doubles-crown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/266604\/","title":{"rendered":"Elise Mertens, Zhang Shuai win Australian Open doubles crown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jan 30, 2026, 10:27 PM ET<\/p>\n<p>MELBOURNE, Australia &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=2221\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elise Mertens<\/a> marked her return to the No. 1 ranking in women&#8217;s doubles by combining with China&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=707\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zhang Shuai<\/a> to win the Australian Open title on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Back together after four years apart as a team, Mertens and Zhang trailed 3-0 and 4-1 in the first set but rallied to beat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=3744\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anna Danilina<\/a> of Kazakhstan and Serbia&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=2090\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aleksandra Krunic<\/a> 7-6 (4), 6-4. Mertens and Zhang led the final set 5-0 before withstanding a comeback attempt when Danilina and Krunic won four straight games.<\/p>\n<p>Currently ranked No. 6 in doubles, Mertens, who won the Wimbledon doubles title last year with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=2665\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Veronika Kudermetova<\/a>, will return to the No. 1 ranking after the Australian Open.<\/p>\n<p>Editor&#8217;s Picks<a name=\"&amp;lpos=story:editorspicks:inline:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/tennis\/story\/_\/id\/47771489\/sabalenka-rybakina-australian-open-title-women-final\" class=\"img-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/r1607680_2_1296x1296_1-1.jpg&#038;w=130&#038;h=130&#038;scale=crop&#038;location=center.jpeg\" width=\"65\" height=\"65\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That will mark the Belgian player&#8217;s 40th cumulative week as No. 1 in doubles and was guaranteed regardless of the outcome of the Melbourne Park final Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>The win Saturday was Mertens&#8217; sixth Grand Slam doubles title, including 2021 and 2024 at Melbourne Park. Zhang now has three, including the 2019 Australian Open and the 2021 U.S. Open.<\/p>\n<p>It was their first Grand Slam trophy as a team, having lost the 2022 Wimbledon final in their last appearance together.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is like cherry on the cake,&#8221; Mertens said. &#8220;We paired up as a team very last-minute . . . this was our first tournament back together. In the second round we saved three match points, so that kind of took us to another level. An unbelievable two weeks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mertens reached the fourth round of women&#8217;s singles at Melbourne Park this year before being beaten by eventual finalist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=3126\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elena Rybakina<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Zhang says she and Mertens adapt well.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know how to play finals, we know how to win finals,&#8221; Zhang said. &#8220;We are both very calm. If something doesn&#8217;t work . . . we always adjust.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In the later men&#8217;s doubles final, American <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=2293\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Christian Harrison<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=2699\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Neal Skupski<\/a> of Britain were scheduled to play the Australian pair of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=1745\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jason Kubler<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=2624\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marc Polmans<\/a>.
