Fans meet Bridgerton Season 4\u2019s romantic heroine<\/a> just as Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson)<\/a> does: as the enigmatic Lady in Silver (Yerin Ha). The aristocratic second son falls head over heels for the \u201csilver ing\u00e9nue\u201d at Violet Bridgerton<\/a>\u2019s (Ruth Gemmell) masquerade ball<\/a>. It\u2019s only at the end of Episode 1 that viewers learn the Lady in Silver is Sophie Baek, a hardworking maid<\/a>. But before she ever joined the staff at Penwood House, Sophie had an entirely different identity \u2014 she lived there as the ward of Lord Penwood (Arthur Lee), her biological father.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sophie was raised as nobility.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cSophie is the illegitimate child of Lord Penwood. Her mother was a maid,\u201d says Bridgerton<\/a> star Ha. The earl took his daughter in with open arms, but, by calling her his \u201cward,\u201d avoided the scandal of claiming Sophie as his own blood relation or progeny. Still, Lord Penwood was able to care for Sophie and raise her with all the benefits befitting her bloodline. From flashbacks, it\u2019s clear that Sophie understood Lord Penwood was her father, despite the \u201cward\u201d story that was used publicly.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"A<\/p>\n

Sophie\u2019s doted-upon childhood changes while she is still a young girl, when the earl marries Araminta (Katie Leung), a widow. He hopes that she will accept Sophie as part of their blended family, alongside Araminta\u2019s daughters from her first marriage, Posy (Isabella Wei) and Rosamund Li (Michelle Mao)<\/a>. Yet Araminta feels blindsided by her new husband\u2019s ward, whom she can tell is actually his child. Araminta worries about what Lord Penwood\u2019s secret means for her own daughters\u2019 financial security in the future.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was very much in love with Lord Penwood. But, when Araminta first discovers that Sophie is Lord Penwood’s child, she is utterly devastated,\u201d says Leung. \u201cThere\u2019s really no question about it, because of the implications of what that means for her two daughters.\u201d<\/p>\n

When the earl dies, Araminta decides to keep Sophie under her roof \u2014 only no longer as a resident. Instead, Sophie must become a maid. All the trappings of society that Sophie enjoyed as her father\u2019s ward slip away, and she\u2019s forced to work for her step-sisters and step-mother. \u00a0\u201cSophie\u2019s forced to work for a family who does not treat her with the respect that the maids get at Bridgerton House, [or] even Featherington House,\u201d says showrunner Jess Brownell. \u201cSo she\u2019s put in this situation where she has to really think on her feet every day to survive. Araminta Gun is the lady of the house, and she has very exacting standards.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"A<\/p>\n

Araminta, however, sees Sophie\u2019s employment as a compromise: \u201cI don\u2019t think Araminta thinks that she\u2019s doing it out of malice,\u201d Leung says. \u201cShe decides to have her as a maid in the household to feed her, clothe her, put a roof over her head, which she thinks will suffice.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, the impact is devastating for Sophie, who has weathered the loss of both parents and a way of life. \u201cShe\u2019s a woman who has lived through a lot and by those circumstances has had to find a way to survive,\u201d says Brownell.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"Women<\/p>\n

\u201c[Sophie knows] she could be on the street with no money,\u201d adds Ha. \u201cIt all manifests in this deep trauma, and that\u2019s why she has her guard up. She doesn\u2019t trust anyone who says, \u2018I promise this for you,\u2019 because that has never been true for Sophie.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u2019s Sophie\u2019s history and subsequent scrappy attitude that, in part, inspired Ha to take on the role. \u201cWhat drew me to Sophie as a character was her strong moral compass,\u201d the actor says. \u201cShe doesn\u2019t change who she is for anybody else.
