That\u2019s because the Trump administration is terminating the protection for Haitian TPS holders after February 3 as part of its broader immigration crackdown.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1c0pcm0003356pu9fllku5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Replacing the employees, who care for roughly 115 residents at the Boston center, will take time. They include hard-to-find, experienced certified nursing assistants and dietary aides who know their charges\u2019 needs and habits \u2013  who likes their chicken mixed with mashed potatoes while being fed, who needs extra help getting out of bed and who might be breathing a little more heavily, a potential sign of a health problem.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1c0pcm0005356pppv4ercs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Like O\u2019Leary, elder care industry leaders nationwide are bracing for the loss of a key pillar of their workforce. Nearly 350,000 Haitians are set to lose their TPS this week, and a sizeable share of them care for older Americans. They work as nursing assistants, dietary aides, cooks, maintenance workers and other staffers in nursing homes, rehab centers and assisted living facilities. They also help senior citizens as aides in their homes.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/54932495559-4a29bcbbf6-o.jpg\" alt=\"Colin O\u2019Leary, who runs Laurel Ridge Rehabilitation &amp; Skilled Care Center in Boston, recently had to let go of 13 Haitian employees whose Temporary Protected Status is expiring.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1c0pcm0006356pk9vuudwj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The looming departures add pressure to an industry already contending with 350,000 open positions \u2014 a shortfall that\u2019s expected to grow in coming years as the nation ages.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1c0pcm0007356perlmzsfq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Overall, immigrants make up more than a quarter of workers who provide direct care in long-term care settings, according to KFF, a health policy research group. Notably, they make up nearly one-third of those who work in home care.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1c0pcm0008356pbptolbi9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The curtailment of immigration is \u201creally creating problems for a sector that is already challenged from a workforce perspective,\u201d said Katie Smith Sloan, CEO of LeadingAge, an association of nonprofit providers of aging services.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1c0pcm0009356ps1txfhyq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some of her members already have to rely on costly temporary workers from agencies, while others turn prospective clients away because of a lack of staff to provide quality care.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1c0pcm000a356pgm80f604@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In Boston, the local elder care industry is suffering from a severe staffing crunch, which is only expected to get worse. The city has one of the largest Haitian communities in the US.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1c0pcm000b356p2gqotd1k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            O\u2019Leary\u2019s tight budget makes it difficult to raise wages to compete for new hires or turn to a staffing agency. Meanwhile, he\u2019ll have to lean on his remaining employees to work a lot of overtime as he rebuilds the team, which he fears could take years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1c0pcm000c356pkojmj6km@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But that wasn\u2019t his main concern.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1c0pcm000d356p68n8iq7p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI felt like I was letting them down as a leader,\u201d he said of his Haitian employees.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1c0pcm000f356prtkm53v3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Haitian TPS holders are among the latest foreign-born residents whose lives are being upended by the Trump administration, which is focused on slashing the number of immigrants entering and living in the US.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1c0pcm000g356pua4tww8o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Department of Homeland Security announced the termination of TPS designation for immigrants from multiple countries, including Honduras, Nepal and South Sudan, though federal judges have stymied many of those efforts. Many Haitian TPS holders are hoping that a federal judge in the District of Columbia will grant them at least a temporary reprieve.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1c0pcm000h356ppdtyxsjw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            TPS relief applies to people who would face extreme hardship if forced to return to homelands devastated by armed conflict or natural disasters. The recipients are vetted and are not eligible if they\u2019ve been convicted of any felony or two or more misdemeanors in the US. The designation has since been renewed multiple times as the country faces a host of crises, including widespread violence by armed gangs, food insecurity, displacement and a leadership vacuum after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/americas\/live-news\/haiti-president-assassinated-updates-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the president was assassinated in 2021<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1c0pcm000j356poxfn19yv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Several Haitians have sued DHS, arguing the department didn\u2019t conduct the necessary review of whether it\u2019s safe to return. The suit also alleged that the protection is being terminated, in part, because of President Donald Trump\u2019s \u201cracial, ethnic, and national-origin animus towards Haitians.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1c0pcm000k356pshbelvyy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Asked for comment, DHS said that the Haiti\u2019s TPS program \u201cwas never intended to be a de facto asylum program, yet that\u2019s how previous administrations have used it for decades.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1c0pcm000l356phocy1ent@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe assertion that the only way we can take care of our seniors is by allowing unvetted illegal aliens and foreigners with criminal records to remain in the country is grossly false and lazy,\u201d DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1c0pcm000n356po7yezica@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One TPS holder who cares for a senior citizen in New York told CNN that her heart pounds when she thinks she might have to go back to Haiti, which she fled in 2023. She\u2019s afraid of being killed if she returns, but she also doesn\u2019t know how she\u2019ll be able to survive in the US if she can\u2019t work.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1c0pcm000o356p9r05d3ry@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere are a lot of insecurities in Haiti, and then there\u2019s a lot of gang violence that continues to go up,\u201d she said in Haitian Creole through a translator.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1c0pcm000p356pnuur1nlr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meanwhile, she also worries about what will happen to the elderly woman with whom she has developed a connection after caring for her for nearly two years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1c0pcm000q356pj619co8a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cShe appreciates the help I provide to her,\u201d said the caretaker, who asked that CNN not use her name for fear of reprisal from the federal government. In turn, she is proud that the woman trusts her.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1c0pcm000r356pf6zg4b6f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Many home care agencies are having difficult conversations with clients and their families, informing them that their caregivers will no longer be able to provide services, said Katia Guillaume, a vice president at Service Employees International Union Local 1199, which represents about 150,000 home care workers in three states.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1c0pcm000s356pktxqle1o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen you are providing care so intimate as feeding and bathing, you develop a bond with someone,\u201d Guillaume said. \u201cTo know that that person is no longer going to be here \u2013 when this person is sometimes the only person they see \u2013 it\u2019s really hard for the patients. It\u2019s hard for the caregivers. It\u2019s hard for the employers.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1c0pcm000t356pp0mbrchk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Goodwin Living, which provides senior living and health care services to 4,000 older adults in the Washington, DC area, lost four workers from Haiti last summer when the Trump administration terminated their humanitarian parole.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1c0pcm000u356pd0ceqxe2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It took about six months to replace one of the cooks, said Rob Liebreich, CEO of the faith-based nonprofit organization.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/rob-liebreich-goodwin-living-president-ceo.jpg\" alt=\"Rob Liebreich, CEO of Goodwill Living, has had a tough time finding staffers to replace Haitian immigrants who have lost their work authorization.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1c0pcm000w356phmx2f3lm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Soon, Liebreich expects to part with four more workers \u2013 including another cook \u2013 from El Salvador, whose TPS will expire in coming months. He fears those staffers will be even more difficult to replace since finding the right people is becoming ever more challenging.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1c0pcm000x356podx7w5tk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Already, Goodwin Living can\u2019t meet the demand for home hospice and home health services because it can\u2019t find enough workers. Now it\u2019s considering whether to build more independent living rather than assisted living units that require clinical staff.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1c0pcm000y356pduy9clkg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s making us think about what kind of services should we offer, what limitations are going to be in front of us in terms of staffing that may limit our ability to provide services,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd that\u2019s not what we should be thinking about.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Colin O\u2019Leary recently had the toughest day of his career.
