But there was another problem: a subprime housing crisis fueled by toxic mortgage assets. The crisis was so severe that Wall Street investment bank Bear Stearns had collapsed just three months earlier.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1dr7xi0001356ptn3tukup@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kevin Warsh, like millions of Americans, was alarmed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b00033b6po71d48q2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Except Warsh, now President Donald Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/30\/economy\/kevin-warsh-nominated-fed-chair\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pick to lead the Federal Reserve<\/a>, sounded more worried about inflation than mass layoffs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b00043b6pbmq2qyki@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cInflation risks, in my view, continue to predominate as the greater risk to the economy,\u201d Warsh, then serving on the Fed\u2019s powerful Board of Governors, told his colleagues during the June 2008 meeting, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/monetarypolicy\/files\/FOMC20061212meeting.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">transcripts<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b00063b6phx4393b2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But just months later, unemployment would skyrocket to 10% in what later became known as the Great Recession.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b00073b6pj0n7fmb0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even in the spring of 2009, just months after the spectacular implosion of Lehman Brothers and with millions of Americans out of work, Warsh sounded more focused on prices.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b00083b6p5jv8q37x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI continue to be more worried about upside risks to inflation than downside risks,\u201d Warsh said during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/monetarypolicy\/files\/FOMC20090429meeting.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">April 2009 meeting<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/shutterstock-editorial-7864694a.jpg\" alt=\"Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner (R) confers with Kevin Warsh (L), member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve, during the G20 meeting of finance ministers near Horsham, West Sussex, England, on March 14, 2009.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1297\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b00093b6pajv6icmx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Warsh\u2019s crisis-era comments raise questions about just what kind of a Fed chair he will be, if confirmed by the Senate.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b000a3b6pr1aw2ok1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While Trump has demanded lower rates \u2014 the lowest on the planet \u2014 Warsh isn\u2019t known as a low-rates guy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b000b3b6ppl5ldk4h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Many on Wall Street view Warsh as an inflation hawk, someone who prefers higher rates to keep a lid on prices. In fact, Warsh is considered the most hawkish of the finalists to run the Fed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b000c3b6ptqzd1zn3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe question is: Which Warsh do we get?\u201d Ed Mills, Washington policy analyst at Raymond James, told CNN. \u201cThe Warsh who was an inflation hawk at the Fed? Or the one who interviewed for this job?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b000d3b6psgz2etdv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Perhaps the answer is both.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b000f3b6pgsmjej8b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In recent months, Warsh has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/opinion\/the-federal-reserves-broken-leadership-43629c87?st=f9cgJ4&amp;reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">advocated for lower rates<\/a>, arguing that surging productivity and the AI boom are setting the stage for speedy growth without troublesome inflation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b000g3b6puq1foxk4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Michael Feroli, chief US economist at JPMorgan Chase, told clients on Friday that his \u201cbest guess\u201d is Warsh will make the case for rate cuts, at least for this year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b000h3b6prhxwqfqg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019d also suspect that as time goes on, his leanings will be more open to revision and perhaps reversion back to a more hawkish view,\u201d Feroli wrote in a report, \u201cparticularly as we get past the midterms and into the last innings of a presumably lame duck administration.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/2026-01-13t144114z-455925105-rc2c0jax9nly-rtrmadp-3-usa-trump-fed-powell.JPG\" alt=\"Major construction work continues at the Federal Reserve building in Washington, DC, on January 13, 2026.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b000i3b6p4bi43wt1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Tellingly, JPMorgan isn\u2019t penciling in any new rate cuts. Feroli said the bank still expects the Fed will \u201cbe on hold for the rest of the year\u201d \u2014 even with Warsh potentially at the helm.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b000j3b6pso6m9tls@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Joe Brusuelas, chief economist at RSM, told CNN that Warsh\u2019s 2008-2009 calls on inflation are a \u201cred flag\u201d and evidence that he \u201cgot the policy response wrong.\u201d Brusuelas added of Warsh: \u201cHis first instinct is hawkish and rarely saw a potential rate hike he didn\u2019t like.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b000l3b6pojz4i0xy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Of course, hindsight is 20\/20. Warsh is hardly the only Fed official with comments that did not age well and he did vote in favor of the emergency steps the Bernanke-led Fed took at the time.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b000m3b6p7ykm38ti@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, Wall Street certainly isn\u2019t trading like Trump tapped a low-rate dove to run the Fed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b000n3b6pizimywsf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            US stocks retreated, the beaten-down US dollar rallied and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/business\/live-news\/fed-chair-nominee-kevin-warsh-01-30-26?post-id=cml134mu6000c356pq8yu46qn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">precious metals trade blew up.<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b000o3b6p9ufro01t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Gold, which is viewed as a hedge against inflation and a loss of Fed independence, plummeted 8% on Friday. Silver, which had been on fire, crashed 25% \u2014 its worst day since 1980.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b000p3b6pjt4h0ty7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cKevin Warsh has been a monetary policy hawk his entire career and most importantly, during a time when the labor markets fell out of bed,\u201d Renaissance Macro Research, a Wall Street research shop, wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RenMacLLC\/status\/2017060678901596255\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">post on X.<\/a> \u201cHis dovishness today stems from convenience. The President risks getting duped.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b000r3b6pc5b2ng3b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump has described Warsh as the \u201ccentral casting guy that people wanted.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b000s3b6pivcanr6r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Warsh\u2019s resume \u2014 a former economist under George W. Bush, Hoover Institution fellow and lengthy experience at the Fed \u2014 makes him look like a safe pick to lead the Fed under a traditional Republican president. Media and Technology Conference in Sun Valley, Idaho, on July 9, 2025.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b000t3b6pfdmxqicb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Stanley Druckenmiller, the billionaire investor and a mentor of Warsh, said it\u2019s \u201cnot correct\u201d to brand Trump\u2019s Fed pick as \u201calways hawkish.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b000u3b6pnkrfc3nn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019ve seen him go both ways,\u201d Druckenmiller <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/4ec81de7-eb59-4be8-81db-bff657e6c5d3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told the Financial Times<\/a> on Friday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b000v3b6pymqxppz9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Warsh has gone the more dovish way of late, a \u201cconvenient shift just as he became a Fed Chair nominee,\u201d according to Stephanie Roth, chief economist at Wolfe Research.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b000w3b6phrn4vkze@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Warsh\u2019s theory of the case is built in part on his long-standing criticism of the Fed\u2019s massive balance sheet. Warsh has said the Fed can shrink its balance sheet so aggressively that it will free officials to slash rates.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b000x3b6pgdv87yo0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, JPMorgan\u2019s Feroli is skeptical, cautioning that a smaller Fed balance sheet would likely lift long-term rates \u2014 driving up the same mortgage rates that Trump has been desperately trying to lower.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b000y3b6pgj67k5jw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe balance sheet is wonky, but the real-world implications are not,\u201d said Mills of Raymond James. \u201cThe focus on affordability and especially mortgage rates could be completely undone by this Fed pick.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b00103b6p9v29tx0e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One former Fed official who worked with Warsh is holding out hope that \u201cthe real Warsh\u201d will stand up, eventually.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b00113b6pwul9e8e6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cKevin has wanted this job for a very, very long time. He\u2019s a slick operator, highly skilled at climbing the greasy pole,\u201d the official told CNN on the condition of anonymity. \u201cBut this post is his life\u2019s endeavor. Getting it now, only to prove a toadie, would be a Pyrrhic victory. The longer he\u2019s on the job, the more independent he can be.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b00123b6pzo2147ri@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump\u2019s new Fed chair will likely outlast him in office. While Trump\u2019s term in the White House ends in January 2029, the new Fed chair\u2019s term could last through mid-2030.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b00133b6pomslpnl3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And the new Fed chair could get an assist from the Supreme Court.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b00143b6pieliz62p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Justices at the high court, including conservatives, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/22\/politics\/supreme-court-justices-downplay-trump-conduct-analysis-cook\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">expressed skepticism during a hearing last month<\/a> about Trump\u2019s efforts to fire Fed Governor Lisa Cook.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b00153b6pyjp03ywy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If the Supreme Court rules against Trump, it could give Warsh even more job security in case the president has buyer\u2019s remorse (again).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b00163b6po7b1htom@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cDid Trump attempting to fire Governor Cook end up backfiring?\u201d Mills asked. \u201cA Supreme Court ruling reaffirming Fed independence will give Warsh more leeway not to be loyal to Trump.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b00173b6pzfc8bc5s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s a concern that appeared to be very much on Trump\u2019s mind last month at Davos.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml1abt5b00183b6pkl94rauj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cEveryone that I interviewed is great,\u201d Trump said of his Fed selection process <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/stories\/2026\/01\/davos-2026-special-address-donald-trump-president-united-states-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">during his speech<\/a> at the World Economic Forum. \u201cProblem is, they change once they get the job \u2026 It\u2019s amazing how people change once they have the job.
