Ms. Lauryn Hill<\/a> made a rare televised appearance at the 2026 Grammys<\/a> to pay tribute to both the late D\u2019Angelo<\/a> and Roberta Flack<\/a>. Taking the stage at Los Angeles\u2019 Crypto.com Arena in a black ball gown and wide sunglasses, Hill sang part of her 1998 song \u201cNothing Even Matters\u201d\u2014which originally featured D\u2019Angelo\u2014before welcoming a nonstop string of artists as she led a sprawling medley of songs by D\u2019Angelo and Flack. For her D\u2019Angelo segment, Hill was joined by Leon Thomas for \u201cDevils Pie,\u201d Lucky Daye on \u201cBrown Sugar,\u201d Raphael Saadiq and Anthony Hamilton for \u201cLady,\u201d Bilal for \u201cUntitled (How Does It Feel),\u201d and Jon Batiste for a brief bit of \u201cAfrica.\u201d Hill then transitioned into Flack\u2019s \u201cThe First Time Ever I Saw Your Face\u201d backed by a full band and Batiste, before singing \u201cCompared to What\u201d alongside Leon Bridges and Alexia Jayy, \u201cCloser I Get to You\u201d with Lalah Hathaway\u2014the daughter of Donny Hathaway\u2014and October London, and \u201cWhere Is the Love\u201d with John Legend and Chaka Khan.<\/p>\n

Hill tacked on \u201cFeel Like Makin\u2019 Love\u201d before looking out at the sea of people and asking where Wyclef Jean<\/a> was. Right on cue, the Fugees<\/a> member rose from the crowd with a guitar strapped around his chest and walked onstage as they sang Flack\u2019s original version of \u201cKilling Me Softly With His Song\u201d together. Once onstage, he and Hill transitioned into their own rendition of the single on The Score<\/a>, getting a standing ovation from the audience.<\/p>\n

In October 2025, D\u2019Angelo died<\/a> from cancer. He was 51. Although famously reclusive, D\u2019Angelo helped define the neo-soul movement and was a revered visionary, influencing the genre not only in the \u201990s with his solo debut Brown Sugar<\/a>, but with the unpredictable jams of Voodoo<\/a> the following decade, and his surprise release Black Messiah<\/a> in 2014.<\/p>\n

Flack died<\/a> in February 2025 after living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis\u2014the neurological condition also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig\u2019s disease\u2014for years. Flack\u2018s influence spread far beyond her single \u201cKilling Me Softly With His Song\u201d; she also mentored singers Donny Hathaway and Luther Vandross, founded the Roberta Flack School of Music in the Bronx in 2006, and received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy in 2020. She was 88 years old.<\/p>\n
