At the 2026 Grammy Awards, several celebrities opted for clothes that were a little odd and a little ugly. Arguably they were also the most memorable.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml5885dn000e3b6rrt30k5al@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Amid some of the more conventionally tasteful outfits \u2014 see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/02\/01\/style\/red-carpet-grammy-looks-dress\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hailey Bieber in a black strapless Al\u00e4ia dress<\/a>, or Madison Beer dolled up in an Andrew Kwon gown \u2014 an abundance of head-scratching looks kept us glued to the event.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml58aubz000w3b6rpj78vg8z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Cher on stage in a leather and lace look, with a shredded leather skirt that gave the distinct impression it was falling down. Amy Taylor, frontwoman of Australian pub rock band Amyl and the Sniffers, wore a flesh-toned catsuit with hot pink lace cut-outs, overlaid with a fluffy pink bolero and a cascading floor-length fringe. Jon Batiste in an entirely rhinestone military jacket. That\u2019s without mentioning the red carpet mainstays: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/09\/12\/style\/chappell-roan-vma-andrew-dahling\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chappell Roan<\/a> in a custom Mugler nipple-clasped dress, a remake of the original salacious dress from 1998, reissued with prosthetic areolas; Bad Bunny in Schiaparelli\u2019s first ever custom menswear look \u2014 a velvet tuxedo with plunging lapels and a kinky, corset lace-up that ran along his entire back; Lola Young in a sweater and tracksuit pants from Vivienne Westwood, smartened up with a stripey tie; while Shaboozey fully committed to an outfit of wacky halves: a Ralph Lauren tuxedo jacket and vest paired with belted jeans, also by the brand.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/gettyimages-2259482264.jpg\" alt=\"Chappell Roan's dress was a recreation of a controversial Mugler 1998 look, though hers featured prosthetic nipples unlike the original.\" class=\"image_expandable__dam-img image_expandable__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_expandable__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"4087\" width=\"2724\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/gettyimages-1438962432.jpg\" alt=\"Thierry Mugler used Belgian model Erica Vanbriel's real nipple piercings to hold up his original design.\" class=\"image_expandable__dam-img image_expandable__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_expandable__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"7487\" width=\"4991\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml5885dn000f3b6r5qen05qa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While the definition of bad taste is subjective, it doesn\u2019t always have to be as ostentatious as Batiste\u2019s rhinestones, or Roan\u2019s nipple-hanging gown. Billie Eilish, wearing the niche Swedish brand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/03\/10\/style\/hodakova-upcycling-lvmh-prize-2024-paris-fashion-week\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hodakova<\/a>, tested the boundaries of judgment with an outfit that was deliberately frumpy. Eilish\u2019s jacket and skirt were made from reworked men\u2019s trousers, with every original pocket, belt loop and seam from the pant\u2019s previous form made visible in the new look. Her long white socks fell just below the knee, making her sock suspenders \u2014 the eternally unflattering male equivalent to the much-fetishized female stocking suspenders \u2014 redundant. From the perspective of looking beautiful in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/style\/valentino-funeral\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">conventional Valentino Garavani way<\/a>, Eilish\u2019s outfit was ineffectively \u201cwrong.\u201d But there was something deeply engrossing about it \u2014 the abundance of useless straps, the socks and pointed stilettos, the 1950s British grandma coin purse \u2014 that made you want to look more closely.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/gettyimages-2259475077.jpg\" alt=\"Billie Eilish in Hodakova.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"5000\" width=\"3333\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml5885dn000g3b6rxj5ssv5m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cUgly is attractive, ugly is exciting. Maybe because it is newer,\u201d Prada told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/05\/27\/t-magazine\/power-of-one-miuccia-pradas-circle-of-influence.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">T Magazine in 2013<\/a>. \u201cThe investigation of ugliness is, to me, more interesting than the bourgeois idea of beauty. And why? Because ugly is human. It touches the bad and the dirty side of people.\u201d On the runways for both Prada and Miu Miu, the designer has made a point of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.showstudio.com\/projects\/ugly\/essay-alexander-fury\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">challenging our sartorial prejudices in the name of newness<\/a>. Prada\u2019s Spring-Summer 1996 collection \u201cBanal Eccentricity\u201d  (famously dubbed as \u201cUgly Chic\u201d) used patterns typically found on 1950s curtains and table clothes and made them into dowdy knee-length shirts, polo-shirts and dresses modelled with chunky sandals. Over twenty years later, Prada has continued with her distinct, often paradoxical approach that challenges conventional beauty. Prada understands that, as do designers like Jean Paul Gaultier, Demna and Marc Jacobs. Uncomfortable things spark conversation, require more attention, ask you to look and linger for longer \u2014 all potential indicators of value. In reality, bad taste has always been good for the fashion business. The industry hinges on novelty in order to survive, and requires a constant roster of revolving ideas that might entice customers to update their wardrobes and reinvent themselves in new ways. Arguably, something deemed as bad taste may simply be ahead of its time. Shapes, silhouettes and ideas seem wrong until suddenly one day, they look right.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml5885dn000l3b6ruzjc239q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBad taste is what entertainment is all about,\u201d wrote \u201cHairspray\u201d and \u201cCry-Baby\u201d film director John Waters in \u201cShock Value: A Tasteful Book about Bad Taste,\u201d first published in 1981. \u201cTo understand bad taste one must have very good taste,\u201d he said. There is something rebellious too in the pursuit of strange clothes. It refuses a repetitive definition of beauty fed to us via algorithms. In today\u2019s mass produced, digitally curated world, it takes much more work to look a little weird.\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Does bad taste make for good fashion?
