The trailer<\/a> for Michael, the biopic about Michael Jackson\u2019s life, just dropped.<\/p>\n

The new film from director Antoine Fuqua stars Jackson\u2019s real-life nephew, Jaafar Jackson, as the late music icon, chronicling his life from his challenging childhood to adult superstardom.<\/p>\n

The trailer opens with the King of Pop hyping himself up before a stadium show, as thousands of people cheer his name from the crowd. \u201cYou are confident. You are strong. You\u2019re beautiful. You\u2019re the greatest of all time,\u201d he tells himself.<\/p>\n

The trailer then cuts to shots of Michael as a boy, singing with his brothers in the Jackson 5, as his father, Joe Jackson (Coleman Domingo), gives them some blunt talk at the dining room table: \u201cIn this life, you\u2019re either a winner or a loser,\u201d Joe says. \u201cY\u2019all want to work in the steel mill for the rest of your days? \u2018Cause I sure as hell don\u2019t. Y\u2019all willing to fight for it?\u201d The kids assure him they do with a loud, \u201cYes sir!\u201d<\/p>\n

But as Michael grows up and becomes the star of the group, it\u2019s clear that he\u2019s less than happy with life in the Jackson 5 \u2014\u00a0and with his father\u2019s strict rule over his career. \u201cI love my family,\u201d he says at one point. \u201cBut I just want to do my own thing. I just have all these ideas in my head. I just gotta get them out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Those ideas, of course, are some of the most popular songs in American history, including \u201cBillie Jean\u201d and \u201cThriller.\u201d And while the trailer reveals the highs of Michael\u2019s thriving solo career \u2014\u00a0from his famous music videos to his friendship with a pet monkey \u2014 it also hints at some of his struggles along the way. In one shot, Michael is rolled out of an ambulance on a stretcher wearing his silver sequined glove \u2014 a scene potentially portraying the 1984 incident<\/a> in which his hair caught fire while filming a Pepsi commercial.<\/p>\n

The trailer, however, does not hint at the most notable controversy around Jackson even after his 2009 death: allegations of sexual abuse involving minors, which first began in 1989. Jackson was acquitted<\/a> of child molestation charges in 2005. He had denied all charges and his estate continues to deny the allegations<\/a>, calling ongoing civil suits \u201cextortion<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

That does not mean the film will ignore the allegations. The third act of the film reportedly had to be reshot because it included a depiction of a Jackson accuser who had previously received legal guarantees that he wouldn\u2019t appear in a dramatized version of Jackson\u2019s life, according to the Hollywood Reporter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In September 2025, Jackson\u2019s 27-year-old daughter Paris Jackson said on Instagram that she does not support the film<\/a> \u2014 correcting Domingo\u2019s comments to People<\/a>, in which the actor stated otherwise. She called the movie a \u201csugar-coated\u201d version of her father\u2019s life that includes inaccuracies and \u201cfull-blown lies.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re going to make whatever they\u2019re going to make. A big reason why I haven\u2019t said anything up until this point is because I know a lot of you guys are gonna be happy with it,\u201d she wrote at the time. \u201cA big section of the film panders to a very specific section of my dad\u2019s fandom that still lives in the fantasy, and they\u2019re gonna be happy with it.\u201d<\/p>\n
