And after re-reading The Handmaid\u2019s Tale alongside her incredible new memoir, \u2018Book of Lives<\/a>,\u2019 I understand what she means. Her memoir gives fascinating context to the story, as she shares the horrifying episodes in history that informed the writing of the book \u2013 and make it feel unsettlingly familiar to events taking place across the world right now.\u201d<\/p>\n October \u201925: \u2018Flesh\u2019 by David Szalay<\/a><\/p>\n Goodreads rating: 3.9\/5 stars | Watch Lipa in conversation with author David Szalay<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cThis is a book that constantly keeps you guessing. Even down to the dialogue, which is like nothing I\u2019ve ever read before,\u201d Lipa wrote in her intro<\/a> to the pick. \u201cIn Flesh, David pares speech back to the bone, and there are almost no physical descriptions of any of the characters \u2013 you\u2019re left to picture them for yourself. Instead, key moments such as Istv\u00e1n\u2019s changing fortunes are reflected through small observations like his habit for cigarettes, then cigars, and then vapes. Yet despite these spare details, I found Flesh a tense and gripping read \u2013 and by the end, I cared deeply about Istv\u00e1n.<\/p>\n \u201cDavid Szalay\u2019s discipline as a writer to give us just enough is unmatched. In Istv\u00e1n, he has created a character who will be analysed and puzzled over by every reader [who] encounters him. As more and more men wind up killed, each with these eerily similar dead bodies beside them, local cops are left baffled \u2013 and mayhem ensues.<\/p>\n \u201cIt might sound like a grim tale \u2013 and, of course, the subject matter is harrowing. The book is also a remarkably deep, tender and, at times, disturbing study of these two young souls \u2013 their difficult childhoods, the clubs, bars and galleries they inhabit and the forces of ambition, jealousy and excess that ultimately lead to Basquiat\u2019s death at the age of only 27.<\/p>\n \u201cAs much as anything, this is a love letter to an almost mythical New York City that no longer exists. I love his short story collections, and \u2018Tenth Of December\u2019 is perhaps my favourite. \u2018The Semplica Girl Diaries\u2019 is an absolute standout.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIn The Distance\u201d by Hernan Diaz<\/a> \u2013 \u201cI\u2019m currently reading this strange and evocative western by Diaz. There\u2019s a lot I want to discuss, so friends of mine can expect to find it under their tree this Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThe Last Dream\u201d by Pedro Almod\u00f3var, translated by Frank Wynne<\/a> \u2013 \u201cI\u2019m an Almod\u00f3var evangelist in whatever form he comes to me \u2013 films, interviews, and now short stories.
