{"id":271698,"date":"2026-02-03T10:56:16","date_gmt":"2026-02-03T10:56:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/271698\/"},"modified":"2026-02-03T10:56:16","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T10:56:16","slug":"pension-scheme-reforms-to-tackle-gender-pension-gap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/271698\/","title":{"rendered":"Pension scheme reforms to tackle gender pension gap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Millions of women working in local government will see their pensions improve under new reforms coming into force in April, as the government takes action to close the gender pension gap.<\/p>\n<p>These steps will directly\u202fbenefit\u202fworking people on the front line, serving school lunches, cleaning buildings, managing libraries, and cleaning streets.\u202f<\/p>\n<p>Measures include\u00a0making gender pension gap data reporting statutory and making\u00a0unpaid\u202fadditional\u202fmaternity,\u202fshared parental\u202fand adoption\u202fleave\u202fautomatically pensionable.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Around\u202fthree-quarters\u202fof the scheme\u2019s\u202fnear seven\u00a0million members are women and\u202fone of the most significant\u202fcauses\u202fof the\u202fgender pension gap\u202fis due to maternity leave.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Making unpaid\u202fadditional\u202fmaternity leave automatically pensionable is a critical\u202fstep\u202fthat\u202fwill help close the gender pension gap.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Minister for Local Government and Homelessness, Alison McGovern said\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is\u00a0shocking that this gender imbalance in our pension system has persisted so long, and I am proud that these reforms will help correct this historic inequality.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">These\u00a0crucial\u00a0changes will give hard working cleaners, librarians, school cooks and other public servants the security in retirement they deserve.<\/p>\n<p>Minister for Pensions Torsten Bell said:\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For too long, women have been penalised in retirement simply for having children.<\/p>\n<p>These reforms mean that for millions of women working in local government, taking time out to care for a new baby will no longer cost them their pension security.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">This is about a pension system that works for modern families and properly values the vital contribution of working women across our public services.<\/p>\n<p>TUC general secretary Paul Nowak said:<\/p>\n<p>Everyone deserves a decent quality of life in retirement, but the gender pension gap means that too many women are pushed\u00a0into hardship.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not right.
