{"id":271873,"date":"2026-02-03T13:32:10","date_gmt":"2026-02-03T13:32:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/271873\/"},"modified":"2026-02-03T13:32:10","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T13:32:10","slug":"12-people-let-into-gaza-from-egypt-of-42-who-tried-on-day-1-of-rafah-opening-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/271873\/","title":{"rendered":"12 people let into Gaza from Egypt, of 42 who tried, on day 1 of Rafah opening &#8211; report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Only 12 of the 42 Palestinians who sought to return to the Gaza Strip via the Rafah Border Crossing Monday were allowed to enter, according a Tuesday report, which said 30 were blocked and were returned to Egypt.<\/p>\n<p>Monday was the first day of a limited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/rafah-crossing-opens-for-limited-pedestrian-passage-of-gazans-for-1st-time-in-a-year\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reopening<\/a> of the Rafah Crossing, a move hailed by Palestinians and international organizations as a milestone in the Gaza ceasefire. But the number of people who actually crossed the border was significantly lower than the number permitted, which was set at 50 per day into the Strip and up to 150 people leaving it and entering Egypt \u2014 50 medical patients, each with up to two companions.<\/p>\n<p>A diplomatic official told The Times of Israel that only 12 people crossed in each direction.<\/p>\n<p>A source at the border quoted by AFP said that the 12 people who left the Strip for Egypt were \u201cfive injured people and seven companions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the Qatari channel Al-Araby, 30 people who tried to enter Gaza Monday were stopped and returned to Egypt. (AP Photo\/Mohamed Arafat)<\/p>\n<p>Palestinians returning to Gaza via Egypt first pass through the Rafah Crossing, which is being operated by a team of Palestinian Authority representatives and monitors from the European Union.<\/p>\n<p>From there, they make their way to an IDF checkpoint \u2014 located around five kilometers northeast of the Rafah Crossing, on the Salah a-Din highway \u2014 for a security screening. (Photo by Bashar Taleb \/ AFP)<\/p>\n<p>Going in the other direction, five of the 12 Palestinians who left the Strip for Egypt on Monday did so for medical treatment. Several were children accompanied by adult relatives. An Egyptian health official told AFP that three ambulances had arrived with Palestinian patients who were screened upon arrival to determine which hospital they would be taken to.<\/p>\n<p>Al-Qahera News, citing Egypt\u2019s health ministry, reported that 150 hospitals across the country and 250-300 ambulances have been prepared to receive Palestinian patients as the Rafah Crossing resumes operations.<\/p>\n<p>It said 12,000 doctors and 30 rapid deployment teams have been allocated to work with those transferred.<\/p>\n<p>The director of Gaza City\u2019s Al-Shifa Hospital, Mohammed Abu Salmiya, said there were 20,000 patients in the territory in urgent need of treatment, including 4,500 children.<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3747091\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/AFP__20260203__94WL4AV__v3__HighRes__PalestinianIsraelGazaConflict-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tPalestinian patients accompanied by relatives, get ready to leave the Gaza Strip for treatment abroad through the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt in Khan Yunis, in the southern Gaza Strip on February 3, 2026. (Photo by Bashar Taleb \/ AFP)<\/p>\n<p>All Gazan Palestinians seeking to enter or leave the Strip are required to receive Egyptian approval, with Egypt sending the names to Israel\u2019s Shin Bet domestic security service for clearance.<\/p>\n<p>Israel is supervising the exit of Gazans to Egypt remotely. (COGAT)<\/p>\n<p>The crossing was briefly opened for the evacuation of medical patients during a ceasefire in early 2025.
