Though they&#8217;d enjoyed continued success with their platinum-selling 11th album The Works in 1984, as the mid-80s beckoned, frontman <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/10-peculiar-facts-you-might-not-know-about-freddie-mercury\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/10-peculiar-facts-you-might-not-know-about-freddie-mercury\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/10-peculiar-facts-you-might-not-know-about-freddie-mercury\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Freddie Mercury<\/a> found himself disillusioned and searching for something new.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were all forming a sort of a rut,&#8221; Mercury said at the time. &#8220;I wanted to get out of this last 10 years of what we were doing. It was so routine. It was like, go to the studio, do an album, go out on the road, go round the world and flog it to death, and by the time you came back it was time to do another album.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to get out of this last 10 years of what we were doing<\/p>\n<p>Freddie Mercury<a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"aa30ddd5-89be-4432-8276-29a27e048912-0\">&#8220;After a while it\u02bcs like a painter\u2026 you know, you paint away, and then you stand back and look at it in perspective. That\u02bcs exactly what we needed. We just needed to be away from each other, otherwise you just keep going in that routine and you don\u02bct even know if you\u02bcre going down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>The answer, it turned out, was Live Aid. A benefit show pulled together by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure in aid of the Ethiopian famine, the concert \u2013 dubbed by the organising parties as &#8220;the day music changed the world&#8221; \u2013 brought together some of rock&#8217;s biggest stars over two venues in London and Philadelphia. In a day filled with memorable performances \u2013 here&#8217;s looking at you, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/phil-collins-why-im-not-to-blame-for-led-zeppelins-live-aid-fiasco\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/phil-collins-why-im-not-to-blame-for-led-zeppelins-live-aid-fiasco\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/phil-collins-why-im-not-to-blame-for-led-zeppelins-live-aid-fiasco\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Led Zeppelin<\/a> \u2013 Queen&#8217;s Live Aid performance truly stole the show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/qgVwbjt2dStK7zPjuDJqsk.jpg\" alt=\"Queen stood in a line smiling\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/qgVwbjt2dStK7zPjuDJqsk.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/qgVwbjt2dStK7zPjuDJqsk.jpg\" class=\"inline\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>Queen at the first Rock In Rio in January 1985, six months before Live Aid (Image credit: Dave Hogan\/Hulton Archive\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p id=\"3fe72233-2dee-42dc-89fc-00b105625f60\">Kicking off with an abridged version of 1975 mega-hit <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/brian-may-interview-how-queens-bohemian-rhapsody-movie-was-made\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/brian-may-interview-how-queens-bohemian-rhapsody-movie-was-made\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/brian-may-interview-how-queens-bohemian-rhapsody-movie-was-made\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bohemian Rhapsody<\/a>, Queen&#8217;s Live Aid setlist tore through a medley of their best-loved hits: Radio Ga Ga gave way to Hammer To Fall, before Crazy Little Thing Called Love, We Will Rock You and a rousing We Are The Champions closed their set.<\/p>\n<p>This was all before Mercury and guitarist <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/the-10-best-queen-brian-may-songs\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/the-10-best-queen-brian-may-songs\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-redirect=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/the-top-10-best-queen-brian-may-songs\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/the-10-best-queen-brian-may-songs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brian May<\/a> stole the stage during the show&#8217;s grand finale with their acoustic rendition of Is This The World We Created? \u2013 a moment on which Mercury later remarked: \u201cIt looks as if we wrote Is This the World We Created? for this event, but we didn\u2019t, although it seems to fit the bill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The performance helped transform them into a wonderfully camp, sleek and ubiquitous rock band, and the biggest British live act of the 80s. But it was their performance at Live Aid, where they were the only band smart enough to work out how to play all of their hits in miniature, that bought them back big-time \u2013 even though they hadn&#8217;t appeared on the Band Aid single, and they had incurred the wrath of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/stevie-van-zandt-my-stories\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/stevie-van-zandt-my-stories\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-redirect=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/steve-van-zandt-on-jimi-hendrix-paul-mccartney-miles-davis-and-more\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/stevie-van-zandt-my-stories\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Van Zandt<\/a> after they played in Sun City in apartheid-era South Africa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/yxt8FtT9F82hSiMyXNgoHF.jpg\" alt=\"Queen on stage at Live Aid\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/yxt8FtT9F82hSiMyXNgoHF.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/yxt8FtT9F82hSiMyXNgoHF.jpg\" class=\"inline\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>Freddie Mercury and Brian May doing their thing at Live Aid (Image credit: Pete Still\/Redferns via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p id=\"457b82e8-cd5c-4a33-93d3-672aae84fbbf\">\u201cI would have loved to have been on the Band Aid record, but I only heard about it when I was in Germany,\u201d Mercury said later. \u201cI don\u02bct know if they would have had me on the record anyway, because I\u02bcm a bit old. I\u02bcm just an old slag who gets up every morning, scratches his head and wonders what he wants to fuck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before the Live Aid event, Freddie was clearer on his motivation for the show: \u201cI\u02bcm not doing it out of guilt. Even if I didn\u02bct do it, the poverty would still be there. It\u02bcs something that will always be there, to be honest, when you think about it.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All we can do to help is wonderful things. I\u02bcm doing it out of pride, pride that I\u02bcve been asked as well as that I can actually do something like that. And so basically I\u02bcm doing it out of feeling that one way all the hard work that I\u02bcve actually done over the years has paid off, because they\u02bcre actually asking me to do something to be proud of.<\/p>\n<p>I\u02bcm not doing it out of guilt. Even if I didn\u02bct do it, the poverty would still be there<\/p>\n<p>Freddie Mercury<\/p>\n<p id=\"0b7a7bb6-01d0-4445-aa0e-50e9efe9fdfc\">&#8220;I\u02bcm actually in with all the biggies and I can do something worthwhile. To actually sing something that\u02bcs an integral part of what\u02bcs going on, you know, and the song [We Are The Champions] seems to convey that anyway, without us thinking about it. That\u02bcs what\u02bcs magical, and I think that\u02bcs going to probably bring tears to my eyes, I tell you, when I do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Legend has it that Bob Geldof\u02bcs invitation to Queen to play at Live Aid ran along the lines of: \u201cTell the old faggot it\u02bcs going to be the biggest thing ever\u2026\u201d Freddie, naturally, found that irresistible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Bob Geldof has done a wonderful thing, because he actually sparked it off. I\u02bcm sure we all had it in us to do that, but it took someone like him to actually drive. And it is like a driving force, to get us all to come together. We\u02bcre going to do bits of Bohemian Rhapsody [but] basically, you\u02bcre not trying to put across your new material or anything like that, you\u02bcre playing songs that people identify with, and just make it a happy occasion. They understood the idea exactly, that it was a global jukebox. They just went and smashed one hit after another. It was the perfect stage for Freddie: the whole world. And he could ponce about on stage doing We Are The Champions. How perfect could it get?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Freddie\u02bcs long-term lover, Jim Hutton, had never been to a gig before Live Aid. In his memoir Freddie And Me he described the aftermath of Queen\u02bcs all-conquering Live Aid performance on that historic day at Wembley Stadium: \u201cWhen he came off, he rushed to his trailer and I tottered behind like a puppy.<\/p>\n<p>His first words were: Thank God that\u02bcs over!\u02bc Joe ripped his wet clothes from him and dressed him. Adrenalin still overflowing, Freddie knocked back a large vodka to calm himself. Then his face lit up. As we stepped out of the caravan we met a grinning <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/elton-john-buyers-guide\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/elton-john-buyers-guide\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/elton-john-buyers-guide\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elton John<\/a>. \u201cYou bastards\u2026\u201d he said to Freddie.<\/p>\n<p>Mercury was so good that day that the Royal Mail put him on a commemorative stamp. Just visible behind him in the Peter Blake design is Roger Taylor, who, given Freddie\u02bcs more exotic origins, became the first living Englishman ever depicted on a British postage stamp.<\/p>\n<p>Queen rotated around the stadiums of the world after Live Aid 1985.
