In his visionary films, late director David Lynch loved keeping audiences on their toes. The Hollywood Hills compound<\/a> where he lived and worked also gives visitors a sense that there\u2019s something new lurking around every corner. Assembled over decades and brimming with elements he designed himself, the eclectic property is now on the market for $15 million<\/a>\u2014and ELLE Decor has an exclusive look at some of the details inside. <\/p>\n

David Lynch tapped Eric Lloyd Wright, grandson of Frank Lloyd Wright, to design a pool and pool house. <\/p>\n

In the wake of Lynch\u2019s death earlier this year at age 78, designer Tiffany Howell<\/a> of ELLE Decor A-List firm Night Palm<\/a> was invited to tour the 2.3-acre hillside estate, which is the amalgamation of five parcels he began accumulating in 1987. \u201cIt was deeply emotional to step into home of someone who has been such a muse for me and my work,\u201d says Howell. \u201cStanding among the objects he made, in the rooms he designed, I felt both weight of his absence and vitality of his imagination.\u201d<\/p>\n

The centerpiece of the compound is a mid-century modern structure known as the Beverly Johnson House, built in 1963 by architect Lloyd Wright, son of the legendary Frank Lloyd Wright.<\/a> Featuring walls of glass and a flowing, open floor plan, the pink-hued residence spans 2,000 square feet and comes with design elements reminiscent of the elder Wright, such as clerestory windows and chevron motifs. <\/p>\n

Lynch, who was one of Hollywood\u2019s most famous auteurs, would go on to purchase four adjacent properties over the ensuing years, even tapping Lloyd Wright\u2019s son Eric Lloyd Wright,<\/a> to devise a hilltop pool and pool house. The filmmaker personally collaborated<\/a> with a separate architect on the design of a guest house and a one-bedroom cottage sheathed in grey plaster. \u201cThe spaces are quite minimal, but they still feel so alive,\u201d says Howell. \u201cEach house has its own mood and rhythm.\u201d<\/p>\n

A total of ten bedrooms can be found among the seven structures on site, which together offer more than 11,000 square feet of living space. The spread also served as headquarters for Lynch\u2019s business enterprise, Asymmetrical Productions, and included his private editing suite and screening room. Film buffs might recognize one of the buildings\u2014a Brutalist knockout with a sawtooth roof\u2014from its on-screen appearance in his 1997 film Lost Highway. <\/p>\n

A respected musician and artist, Lynch kept a dedicated art studio on site where he created all of the home\u2019s artworks. Among the ones spotted by Howell were an earth-toned canvas with \u201cMonkey\u201d scrawled at the bottom and an outdoor sculpture called The Water Circus. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou could feel his love of design in everything,\u201d says Howell, noting that some of the property\u2019s smallest details were envisioned by Lynch himself, including handles, hinges, light fixtures, and works of art. \u201cThe door handle wasn\u2019t just a handle, it was a sculpture,\u201d she says. \u201cIt reminded me design doesn\u2019t need to be ornate to be extraordinary\u2014it just has to be honest.\u201d<\/p>\n
