{"id":278470,"date":"2026-02-07T05:37:12","date_gmt":"2026-02-07T05:37:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/278470\/"},"modified":"2026-02-07T05:37:12","modified_gmt":"2026-02-07T05:37:12","slug":"forests-strange-response-to-an-eclipse-may-have-a-more-mundane-explanation-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/278470\/","title":{"rendered":"Forest&#8217;s Strange Response to an Eclipse May Have a More Mundane Explanation : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a controversial study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/trees-sync-up-during-a-solar-eclipse-in-a-forest-wide-phenomenon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">published in April last year<\/a>, researchers described an astonishing phenomenon: a forest of Norway spruce trees (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Picea_abies\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Picea abies<\/a>) appeared to &#8216;sync&#8217; their electrical signaling ahead of a partial solar eclipse.<\/p>\n<p>Now there&#8217;s a new theory about what was actually going on.<\/p>\n<p>Having examined the data, ecologists Ariel Novoplansky and Hezi Yizhaq from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel propose an explanation that&#8217;s not quite as sensational.<\/p>\n<p>Novoplansky and Yizhaq suggest that the electrical activity seen in the trees was caused by a temperature drop, a passing thunderstorm, and several local  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/lightning\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73099\" data-postid=\"191527\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">lightning<\/a> strikes; factors that <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1080\/15592324.2023.2294425\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previous research<\/a> has shown can trigger similar signaling responses in plants.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To me, [the previous study] represents the encroachment of pseudoscience into the heart of biological research,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scimex.org\/newsfeed\/could-a-forests-response-to-a-solar-eclipse-have-really-been-just-a-thunderstorm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> Novoplansky.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Instead of considering simpler, well-documented environmental factors, like a heavy rainstorm and a cluster of nearby lightning strikes, the authors leaned into the more seductive idea that the trees were anticipating the impending solar eclipse.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In October 2022, a forest in the Dolomite mountains in northeastern Italy displayed <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1098\/rsos.241786\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">what researchers described<\/a> as &#8220;individual and collective bioelectrical responses to a solar eclipse&#8221;, with older trees showing stronger signaling before and during the eclipse.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/TreeDiagram.jpg\" alt=\"Tree reaction diagram\" width=\"642\" height=\"390\" class=\"wp-image-191530 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Similar tree reactions to external stimulus don&#8217;t necessarily mean tree-to-tree communications, the researchers argue. (Ariel Novoplansky and Hezi Yizhaq, Trends Plant Sci., 2026)<\/p>\n<p>The activity, the researchers claimed, may have been a sign of the older trees&#8217; experience of previous events being passed on to the rest of the forest. In line with <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1080\/15592324.2024.2333144\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">earlier studies<\/a>, they proposed that the spruce trees were sensing an impending environmental change and coordinating a response. In this case, to a solar eclipse.<\/p>\n<p>Not so, Novoplansky and Yizhaq argue in their new paper. They suggest the environmental change was far more likely to have been the thunderstorm, offering up several reasons why the original team of researchers reached the wrong conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>First, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/incredible-the-total-solar-eclipse-is-huge-for-scientists-heres-why\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar eclipses<\/a> are unique in their path, magnitude, and duration, so it would&#8217;ve been impossible for older trees to use &#8216;remembered&#8217; knowledge to predict the next one.<\/p>\n<p>Second, the gravitational variations that might have provided a heads-up would only have been very slight, roughly comparable to a new Moon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_octopus_yellow\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Octopus-yellow-final-642x272.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" width=\"642\" height=\"272\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-190927 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s more, there was no real need for the trees to coordinate a response to the solar eclipse. It was only a partial eclipse, with the reduction in light comparable to that on a cloudy day, so there wouldn&#8217;t have been any major <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/we-finally-know-how-photosynthesis-starts-it-takes-just-a-single-photon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">disruptions to photosynthesis<\/a> or other processes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The eclipse only reduced light by about 10.5 percent for two short hours, during which the level of sunlight was approximately twice what the trees could practically use,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scimex.org\/newsfeed\/could-a-forests-response-to-a-solar-eclipse-have-really-been-just-a-thunderstorm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> Novoplansky.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Frequent fluctuations in cloud cover at the study location change light quality and quantity by much bigger amplitudes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The researchers point out that the original study only analyzed three trees and five stumps, so it was hardly a thorough data sweep of the forest.
