Satellite trails could make space science nearly impossible, say astronomers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An unprecedented surge in satellite launches is threatening space-based astronomy, with a new study warning that more than 96% of images from space telescopes could be spoiled by satellites.<\/p>\n<p>Published in Nature and led by NASA scientists, the study models how planned megaconstellations of low-Earth-orbit satellites will affect four telescopes: the Hubble Space Telescope and SPHEREx, plus ESA\u2019s ARRAKIHS and China\u2019s Xuntian, currently both still in development.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/how-photograph-satellite-trails.jpg\" alt=\"Photograph showing multiple satellite trails. Credit: Matt Jackson\" class=\"wp-image-174644\"\/>Credit: Matt Jackson<\/p>\n<p>With orbiting satellites projected to reach roughly 560,000 by the late 2030s, researchers estimate that almost all images from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/news\/nasa-spherex-first-images\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SPHEREx<\/a>, ARRAKIHS and Xuntian will be marred by streaks, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/light-pollution-astronomy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">light pollution<\/a> or other interference.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"970\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/orion-nebula-satellite-trails.jpg\" alt=\"This long-exposure image of the Orion Nebula lasted 208 minutes. Abolfath\/NOIRLab\/NSF\/AURA<\/p>\n<p>Hubble may avoid some of the impact, thanks to its narrower field of view, but roughly 40% of its images are still at risk.<\/p>\n<p>Lead author Alejandro Borlaff from NASA\u2019s Ames Research Center warns the implications are severe.<\/p>\n<p>He explains that satellites reflect sunlight, moonlight and even earthshine just enough to obliterate the faint light from distant galaxies, nebulae or exoplanets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen telescopes stare at the Universe attempting to unveil distant galaxies, planets and asteroids,\u201d says Borlaff, \u201csatellites sometimes cross in front of their cameras, leaving bright traces of light that erase the dim signal that we receive from the cosmos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The contamination isn\u2019t just a nuisance; it jeopardises many scientific goals.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1617\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/10.ChaoWang_StarlinkSatelliteTrails.jpg\" alt=\"Starlink satellite trails Chao Wang, Ulanqab City, Inner Mongolia, China, 2 June 2025 Equipment: Nikon D750 camera, Sigma Art 14mm lens, Marsace ET-2541s tripod\" class=\"wp-image-179772\"\/>Starlink satellite trails captured by Chao Wang, Ulanqab City, Inner Mongolia, China, 2 June 2025<\/p>\n<p>Widefield surveys, deep observations of faint objects, measurements of distant galaxies and searches for near-Earth asteroids could all be compromised. Unless operators are asked to justify their use of precious space in more than commercial terms, astronomy will be second in any list of priorities, behind making money.<\/p>\n<p>Low Earth orbit is a shared resource that belongs to all of humanity.
