\n\tBarcelona-born actor Eduard Fern\u00e1ndez received the 2025 National Cinematography Award Sept. 20 from the Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, at the 73rd San Sebasti\u00e1n Film Festival. The prize, granted by the Culture Ministry\u2019s Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts (ICAA), carries a cash award of \u20ac30,000 ($35,100).<\/p>\n

\n\tThe award ceremony was attended by various cultural figures and institutional representatives, including El Deseo producer Esther Garc\u00eda who had received the Donostia Career Achievement award at the festival\u2019s opening ceremony the night before.<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter briefly reflecting on his early days in cinema, a visibly moved Fern\u00e1ndez ended his speech by whipping out a keffiyeh shawl to wrap around his shoulders, saying: \u201cThe atrocity that is happening in Palestine, the savagery of arguing over a word\u2013 genocide or not \u2013 is irrelevant, even though it\u2019s legally important. Allowing children to starve to death is barbaric, regardless of the term you use,\u201d he stated, reading out the names of children under the age of two who had died as a result of the war. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tHe repeated a cry that began at the San Sebastian<\/a>\u2018s opening night where protesters bearing Palestinian flags disrupted the red carpet proceedings outside the festival venue, the Kursaal, and where Pedro Almod\u00f3var, after handing the award to Garc\u00eda at the ceremony, also called for an end to the war. \u201cStop it now!\u201d Garc\u00eda exclaimed in her acceptance speech.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThey want to kill them all in the most cruel and brutal way,\u201d Fern\u00e1ndez continued, adding that \u201cthose who are not moved by the atrocities we see every day on television have a deep problem with their humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cGaza<\/a> is a mirror in which we all appear, whether we like it or not,\u201d he declared.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe jury of the 2025 National Cinematography Award unanimously selected Fern\u00e1ndez \u201cfor being one of the most outstanding actors in our cinema and for having had an exceptional 2024 with two remarkable performances in two completely different films: the noble man who fights for the common good in \u2018The 47\u2019 (\u2018El 47\u2019), and the role for which he won the Goya for best actor for, \u2018Marco,\u2019 where he transforms into the complex and contradictory figure of Enric Marco.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe had also made his directorial debut with his short film \u201cEl otro,\u201d they noted.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe coveted award recognizes the most outstanding contributions to Spanish cinema. The award, which is usually presented by the Minister of Culture during the festival, recognized \u201cAlcarr\u00e0s\u201d producer Mar\u00eda Zamora in its previous edition, joining a list of luminaries in Spanish cinema, including Pen\u00e9lope Cruz, Jos\u00e9 Sacrist\u00e1n, Isabel Coixet, Antonio Banderas<\/a>, Fernando Trueba<\/a>, Carla Sim\u00f3n and many others.<\/p>\n
