Coronation Street<\/a> star Beverley Callard<\/a> has revealed that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The 68-year-old, who played Rovers Return barmaid Liz McDonald for three decades on the North West soap, told RTE\u2019s Late Late Show on Friday (6 February) that the illness is in its \u201cvery early stages\u201d.<\/p>\n

She told the show\u2019s host Patrick Kielty<\/a> that she is set to undergo further testing before having \u201can operation and some radiotherapy\u201d. <\/p>\n

Callard, who has recently joined the cast of Irish soap Fair City, said she received the news from her doctor in a phone call just minutes before she was set to start filming. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve had some tests just before I left the UK, and literally 15, 20 minutes before I was in my dressing room at Fair City, getting ready to go on,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I was quite nervous and thinking, \u2018I hope everybody thinks I\u2019m all right\u2019, whatever.<\/p>\n

Callard said that the illness is in its \u2018very early stages\u2019 (PA)<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd my consultant rang me and said, \u2018you\u2019ve got to come back to the UK.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI said, \u2018Well, I can\u2019t possibly, I\u2019ve just taken a new job\u2019. I said \u2018I\u2019m away for a month\u2019, and I was diagnosed with breast cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added that she will \u201ctravel back to the UK tomorrow, just for a couple of weeks\u201d, where her doctors are \u201cgoing to test lymph nodes and lymph glands\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut then I need an operation and some radiotherapy, and then I\u2019m coming back to Fair City, so I will be back in just a few weeks,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Callard told fans that she is feeling \u201cabsolutely fine\u201d but admitted that her \u201chead was a bit mashed for the first few days\u201d after receiving the diagnosis.<\/p>\n

The star left \u2018Coronation Street\u2019 in 2020 after three decades on the cobbles (PA)<\/p>\n

The actor joined Coronation Street in 1989 and eventually left the soap in 2020.<\/p>\n

She has also appeared in the Noughties comedy Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps and has served as a panellist on Loose Women.<\/p>\n

She took part in I\u2019m a Celebrity\u2026 Get Me Out of Here! in 2020. <\/p>\n
