Somalian President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has slammed Israel\u2019s \u201cinterference\u201d in his country, saying its recognition of the breakaway region of Somaliland<\/a> has further increased instability and weakened international order.<\/p>\n In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera broadcast on Saturday, Mohamud said Somalia \u201cwill never allow\u201d the establishment of an Israeli base in Somaliland and will \u201cconfront\u201d any such move.<\/p>\n Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list<\/p>\n He also warned that the proposed Israeli base could be used as a springboard to attack neighbouring countries.<\/p>\n Mohamud\u2019s comments came amid a regional outcry over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s decision in December to recognise Somaliland<\/a>, a breakaway part of Somalia comprising the northwestern portion of what was once the British Protectorate.<\/p>\n The territory\u00a0sits astride one of the world\u2019s most critical maritime choke routes, flanked by multiple conflicts in the Horn of Africa and the Middle East.<\/p>\n Israel\u2019s move made it the first country in the world to recognise Somaliland as an independent state and came months after The Associated Press news agency reported that Israeli officials had contacted parties in Somaliland to discuss using the territory for forcibly displacing Palestinians amid Israel\u2019s genocidal war on Gaza.<\/p>\n Israel and Somaliland have denied the claims, but a Somaliland official from the country\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation told Israel\u2019s Channel 12 in January that an Israeli military base is \u201con the table and being discussed\u201d, though its establishment depends on the terms.<\/p>\n Somalia has denounced Israel\u2019s move as an attack on its territorial integrity and unity, a position backed by most African and Arab leaders, and urged Netanyahu to withdraw the recognition.<\/p>\n
