New data from Global Energy Monitor and the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air found that developers in China <a href=\"https:\/\/energyandcleanair.org\/publication\/built-to-peak-coal-power-expansion-runs-out-of-room-in-china\/\" class=\"styles_linkEmbed__SNmaX\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">submitted applications to build 161 GW of coal-fired power plants last year<\/a>, a record. The country\u2019s domestic output <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/peak-coal-may-be-elusive-peak-seaborne-coal-is-here-2026-02-04\/\" class=\"styles_linkEmbed__SNmaX\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">also reached a new high last year<\/a>, up 1.2% on 2024 figures, government data showed.<\/p>\n<p>Yet solar power capacity is forecast to <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cec.org.cn\/#\/newsdetails?id=2018282664528424961\" class=\"styles_linkEmbed__SNmaX\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">overtake coal this year<\/a>, according to the China Electricity Council, demonstrating China\u2019s breakneck addition of clean power: Overall, wind, solar, nuclear, and hydropower will account for about two-thirds of the country\u2019s power mix by the end of the year.
