{"id":280934,"date":"2026-02-08T18:02:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-08T18:02:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/280934\/"},"modified":"2026-02-08T18:02:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-08T18:02:08","slug":"queensland-to-ban-globalize-intifada-chants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/280934\/","title":{"rendered":"Queensland to ban &#8216;globalize intifada&#8217; chants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/diaspora\/article-839148\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Queensland<\/a> is set to ban phrases calling for the globalization of intifada and the destruction of Israel, making it the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/diaspora\/article-885895\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australian<\/a> state to do so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">On Sunday, Queensland Premier David Crisafulli announced that his government would be bringing in a new reform package in response to the Jewish community\u2019s demand for stronger legislation to drive out antisemitism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">The tough laws, to be introduced in Parliament this week, focus on fighting antisemitism and hate by addressing terrorist symbols and phrases, and by increasing safety around places of worship.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the package, Crisafulli is making chanting or displaying the slogans \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/diaspora\/antisemitism\/article-880590\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Globalize the Intifada<\/a>\u201d and \u201cFrom the river to the sea\u201d an offense. Anyone who contravenes this new legislation can be penalized with up to a two-year prison sentence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">He is also increasing penalties for displaying terrorist symbols from sis months to two years\u2019 imprisonment, and will extend the existing prohibition of the display of symbols to include terrorist organizations and state sponsors of terrorism, including the Hamas flag and emblem, the Islamic State flag, the Hezbollah emblem, and Nazi symbols.<\/p>\n<p>Increased protection for places of worship<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">In terms of protections for places of worship, Crisafulli is increasing penalties for assaulting or threatening a person officiating a religious ceremony from two to five years in jail; introducing new offences for impeding or harassing people attending religious services \u2013 maximum three years\u2019 imprisonment \u2013 and creating a new special case of wilful damage for damage to a place of worship, with a maximum penalty of seven years\u2019 imprisonment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cWe called this out from the beginning, we said we\u2019d act, and through this legislation, we are delivering a strong and considered response,\u201d Crisafulli said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cThis is about drawing a clear line \u2013 and stamping out the embers of hatred that were allowed to burn unchecked for too long \u2013 to ensure we protect Queenslanders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cThe Jewish community has been clear: Queensland needs stronger legislation backed by real enforcement to drive out antisemitism, and that is exactly what we are delivering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">In a press conference later on Sunday, he said, \u201cWe won\u2019t accept terrorists on our shores. We won\u2019t accept the seeds of antisemitism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Attorney-General and Justice and Integrity Minister Deb Frecklington said her government was doing \u201ceverything possible to stop the rise of antisemitism,\u201d and remained committed to \u201cprotecting communities and ensuring Queensland remains a safe, inclusive state for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cThis Bill represents a focused and practical step forward for Queensland,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cFor the past two-and-a-half years, the Jewish community has endured unprecedented levels of hate, intimidation, and fear; and the reforms send a clear message that antisemitism and hate have no place in Queensland,\u201d said Queensland Jewish Board of Deputies president Jason Steinberg.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cOur community greatly appreciates the commitment by the Crisafulli government to ensure Jewish Queenslanders can live, work, and play just like any other Queenslander. This Bill moves beyond words and delivers real, practical protections for our community and for all people targeted by hate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new legislation comes just months after the deadly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/diaspora\/antisemitism\/article-884154\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">terror attack at a Chabad Hanukkah party at Bondi Beach<\/a>, when terrorists shot and killed 15 people and injured 40.
