{"id":281674,"date":"2026-02-09T04:55:14","date_gmt":"2026-02-09T04:55:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/281674\/"},"modified":"2026-02-09T04:55:14","modified_gmt":"2026-02-09T04:55:14","slug":"iran-was-notified-ahead-of-witkoff-kushner-visit-to-us-aircraft-carrier-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/281674\/","title":{"rendered":"Iran was notified ahead of Witkoff, Kushner visit to US aircraft carrier \u2013 report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Iran and Oman were reportedly told in advance that US special envoy Steve Witkoff and US President Donald Trump\u2019s son-in-law Jared Kushner would visit the USS Abraham Lincoln on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>CNN on Sunday reported that Tehran and Muscat got advanced notice of the visit \u2014 a move that apparently signaled the persistent threat of US military action against Iran if they did not agree to a deal to curb their nuclear program.<\/p>\n<p>According to Channel 12, Tehran was notified before the visit so that the Iranians would not be angered if caught unaware.<\/p>\n<p>Witkoff and Kushner, who led the US delegation\u2019s talks with Iran in Oman on Friday, visited the aircraft carrier at the invitation of US Central Command chief, Adm. Iran has denied seeking to acquire nuclear weapons. However, it has enriched uranium to levels that have no peaceful application, obstructed international inspectors from checking its nuclear facilities, and expanded its ballistic missile capabilities. (AFP)<\/p>\n<p>The threat of war continues to hover over the negotiations, even as Trump called the talks \u201cvery good\u201d and Iran\u2019s President Masoud Pezeshkian posted on social media that they \u201cconstitute a step forward.\u201d Iran has repeatedly ruled out accepting Washington\u2019s key demand that it give up uranium enrichment.<\/p>\n<p>Following Friday\u2019s first round in Oman, Trump signed an executive order calling for the \u201cimposition of tariffs\u201d on countries still doing business with Iran despite US sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>The United States also announced new sanctions against numerous shipping entities and vessels, aimed at curbing Iran\u2019s oil exports.<\/p>\n<p>In a clear warning against further military action, a new billboard overlooking Tehran\u2019s Palestine Square, which popped up on Sunday, threatened Tel Aviv with missile fire, showing a map of the city\u2019s metro area below the Hebrew words, \u201cUnder raining missiles, it\u2019s a small area!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A caption below that in English reads, \u201cYou start\u2026 We finish it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The picture shows a map of the Tel Aviv metro area, known in Hebrew as Gush Dan, stretching roughly from Ra\u2019anana in the north to Holon and Ben Gurion Airport in the south, and pocked with red target marks. A legend on the map shows the city names of Tel Aviv, Ramat Gan, Bnei Brak, and Herzliya. It then says, \u201cFor the first day!\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u26a1\ufe0f<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BREAKING?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">#BREAKING<\/a> Message from Tehran: New threatening sign in Hebrew unveiled in Palestine Square <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/8SiXZ8aM2T\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/8SiXZ8aM2T<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 War Monitor (@WarMonitors) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WarMonitors\/status\/2020528019673137475?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">February 8, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the billboard, that map appears atop a table with a red button bearing the word \u201cFIRE\u201d in English, along with a walkie-talkie, and models of a plane and missiles.\n<\/p>\n<p>Iran has posted images threatening Israel at the square in the past, including a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/iranian-outlet-publishes-footage-of-israel-doomsday-clock-that-idf-said-it-destroyed\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">clock<\/a> purportedly counting down toward Israel\u2019s destruction.<\/p>\n<p>During the Israel-Iran war last June, Iran fired over 500 ballistic missiles and around 1,100 drones at Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Talks between Washington and Tehran came amid a massive US military buildup in the region in the wake of Iran\u2019s brutal crackdown on protests that began in late December, driven by economic grievances.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities in Iran have acknowledged that 3,117 people were killed in the recent protests, publishing on Sunday a list of 2,986 names, most of whom they say were members of the security forces and innocent bystanders.<\/p>\n<p>International organizations and media have put the toll far higher, possibly in the tens of thousands.<\/p>\n<p>The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), which has kept a running toll since the onset of the protests, says it has verified 6,961 deaths, mainly of protesters, and has another 11,630 cases under investigation.\u00a0It has also counted more than 51,000 arrests.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2026\/01\/AP26011338635181-1.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3732821\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/AP26011338635181-1-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tIn this frame grab from footage circulating on social media shows protesters dancing and cheering around a bonfire as they take to the streets despite an intensifying crackdown as the Islamic Republic remains cut off from the rest of the world, in Tehran, Iran, January 9, 2026.(UGC via AP)<\/p>\n<p>Nobel winner sentenced to six years in jail<\/p>\n<p>An Iranian court sentenced Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi to a six-year prison term, her lawyer told AFP on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has been sentenced to six years in prison for gathering and collusion to commit crimes,\u201d lawyer Mostafa Nili said, adding that she had also received a two-year ban on leaving the country.<\/p>\n<p>Mohammadi also received a one-and-a-half-year prison sentence for propaganda activities and is sentenced to be exiled for two years to the city of Khosf in the eastern province of South Khorasan, the lawyer stated.<\/p>\n<p>She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 in recognition of her activism.
