\n An immigration judge terminated removal proceedings against Tufts University doctoral student R\u00fcmeysa \u00d6zt\u00fcrk<\/a>, who was detained for over a month last year as part of the Trump administration\u2019s effort to target and deport international students and activists involved in pro-Palestinian advocacy, her lawyers said Monday.\n <\/p>\n

\n The Department of Homeland Security hadn\u2019t met its burden to prove \u00d6zt\u00fcrk\u2019s removability, prompting the immigration court to end removal proceedings against her, according to a letter from her attorneys submitted in court and a federal appeals court docket.\n <\/p>\n

\n The move comes after recently unsealed court documents showed<\/a> the federal government didn\u2019t have any evidence that \u00d6zt\u00fcrk had been supporting terrorist activity when she was arrested, and that her visa revocation and arrest were because of an opinion article she wrote containing criticisms of Israel.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cToday, I breathe a sigh of relief knowing that despite the justice system\u2019s flaws, my case may give hope to those who have also been wronged by the U.S. government,\u201d \u00d6zt\u00fcrk wrote in a statement Monday. \u201cThough the pain that I and thousands of other women wrongfully imprisoned by ICE have faced cannot be undone, it is heartening to know that some justice can prevail after all.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Her immigration attorney said the judge\u2019s decision was \u201ca powerful affirmation of fairness and the rule of law.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cWe are grateful that the Judge carefully considered the facts and the law, and we hope this decision serves as a reminder that immigration enforcement must always be guided by justice,\u201d Mahsa Khanbabai said in a statement to CNN.\n <\/p>\n

\"R\u00fcmeysa<\/p>\n

\n \u00d6zt\u00fcrk was detained outside her home in March 2025 as the administration sought to deport her after revoking her student visa.\n <\/p>\n

\n Chilling video<\/a> of the PhD student\u2019s arrest showed a swarm of officers encircling her near her home in Somerville, Massachusetts, as she shrieked in fear, sparking national outrage.\n <\/p>\n

\n That same month, Secretary of State Marco Rubio posted on X that the Trump administration \u201cwill be revoking the visas and\/or green cards of Hamas supporters in America so they can be deported.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin told CNN at the time that DHS and Immigrations and Customs Enforcement investigations had found that \u00d6zt\u00fcrk had \u201cengaged in activities in support of Hamas, a foreign terrorist organization that relishes the killing of Americans.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n A DHS spokesperson called the immigration judge\u2019s ruling \u201cjudicial activism\u201d to \u201ckeep a terrorist sympathizer in this country.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cWe are under no obligation to admit them or let them stay here. Sec. Noem has made it clear that anyone who thinks they can come to America and hide behind the First Amendment to advocate for anti-American and anti-Semitic violence and terrorism \u2013 think again,\u201d the spokesperson said.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u00d6zt\u00fcrk\u2019s arrest came a year after she co-authored a campus newspaper op-ed that was critical of Tufts University\u2019s response to the war in Gaza, and her attorneys have said that she was targeted by the administration in an attempt to chill pro-Palestinian speech in violation of her constitutional rights.\n <\/p>\n

\n The PhD student, originally from Turkey and on a valid F-1 student visa, was shuttled through multiple states following her arrest and suffered a series of asthma attacks without adequate medical care, according to her attorneys.\n <\/p>\n

\n A State Department memo said \u00d6zt\u00fcrk\u2019s visa was revoked following an assessment that her actions \u201c\u2018may undermine U.S. foreign policy by creating a hostile environment for Jewish students and indicating support for a designated terrorist organization\u2019 including co-authoring an op-ed that found common cause with an organization that was later temporarily banned from campus.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u00d6zt\u00fcrk was one of several international university students<\/a> facing deportation as part of the Trump administration\u2019s efforts last spring. The arrests of scholars and students at the hands of masked law enforcement officers, who have taken them into custody by ambushing them on city streets and near their homes, sent a chill across the international student community.\n <\/p>\n

\n The Trump administration was ordered last May to release \u00d6zt\u00fcrk, with the judge saying that \u201ccontinued detention potentially chills the speech of the millions and millions of individuals in this country who are not citizens.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Following weeks of grueling detainment, \u00d6zt\u00fcrk returned<\/a> to her home state a day after US District Judge William K. Sessions III ordered her immediate release.\n <\/p>\n

\n A federal judge ruled in December that \u00d6zt\u00fcrk could resume research and teaching<\/a> while she addresses the consequences of her visa revocation.\n <\/p>\n
