The Olympic cross-country skier describes the intensity of suffering her sport can inflict as a \u201cpain cave.\u201d It doesn\u2019t frighten her; she\u2019s used to digging deep, she can control the pain. What does terrify her, however, is how rapidly her sport is changing because of something completely out of her control: climate change.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfg694v00053b6s4kmtn1fn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She sees the effects everywhere. \u201cI\u2019ve raced World Cups where it was pouring rain and there was barely a strip of snow to ski on, entire seasons were reshaped overnight,\u201d Diggins said. It\u2019s become impossible to hold a winter sporting event without fake snow, she <a href=\"https:\/\/protectourwinters.org\/with-a-medal-in-my-pocket\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">wrote<\/a> in a blog.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfg694v00063b6s413djcw2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Milan Cortina Winter Games in the Italian Alps, which will mark Diggins\u2019 final Games, are no different. Snowmaking machines were busy pumping out snow for weeks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfg694v00073b6slihtb2h0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As humans continue to burn planet-heating fossil fuels, winter is changing: Snowfall is declining, snowpack is shrinking and temperatures are rising in many places. Where once mountains were blanketed in thick white powder, many lie bare well into winter.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfg694v00083b6sxrx6bz3u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For those who rely on snow for their livelihoods, every ski season is a nail-biter. For the Winter Olympics, it\u2019s a high-cost, high-stress disaster. Climate change is \u201creshaping winter sport as we know it,\u201d said a spokesperson for the International Olympic Committee.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfg694v00093b6sium4yrf8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As athletes compete in Italy, the future of the Winter Olympics hangs in the balance. People are not just questioning how to keep the Games alive, but whether they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/02\/07\/europe\/italy-protests-rail-damage-latam-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">should be kept alive at all<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfg7d8n000d3b6sp8dw4bfs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Games have changed hugely since the first Winter Olympics, held in France in 1924. Back then, almost all events happened outside, but by the 1980s, sports including ice skating, hockey and curling had moved to indoor rinks, where perfect ice could be guaranteed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfg7wwh000n3b6st05oebkh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Snow and cold conditions have become increasingly unreliable. February temperatures in every Olympic host city since 1950 have warmed by an average of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatecentral.org\/climate-matters\/warming-winter-olympics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">4.8 degrees<\/a> Fahrenheit (2.7 Celsius), according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatecentral.org\/climate-matters\/2026-warming-winter-olympics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">data<\/a> from research non-profit Climate Central.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfg7wwh000o3b6sgztfv94s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This year\u2019s Winter Olympics take place in venues across the Italian Alps, with several outdoor events centered around the town of Cortina d\u2019Ampezzo, which previously hosted the Olympics in 1956. In the 70 years since, February temperatures in the town have risen by 6.4 degrees Fahrenheit (3.6 Celsius).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfg7wwh000p3b6s7ezd2ymq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That translates to around 41 fewer days below freezing each year. Without reliably cold temperatures, snow is wetter and thinner, conditions are rainier \u2014 and for athletes that can be dangerous.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfg8ev2000u3b6skg2nk244@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, warm temperatures were blamed in part for <a href=\"https:\/\/research.brighton.ac.uk\/en\/publications\/high-incidence-of-injury-at-the-sochi-2014-winter-paralympic-game\/#:~:text=In%20a%20Winter%20Paralympic%20Games,in%20future%20Winter%20Paralympic%20Games.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">high crash and injury rates<\/a>. \u201cIt was like skiing in a slushy,\u201d said Daniel Scott, a professor of geography and environmental management at the University of Waterloo. \u201cPeople weren\u2019t hitting jumps at the speeds they anticipated. They weren\u2019t getting to landing areas properly,\u201d he told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/002-c-001-shutterstock-editorial-11969609d.jpg\" alt=\"A skier competes at the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy.\" class=\"image_expandable__dam-img image_expandable__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_expandable__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"3334\" width=\"2500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/003-c-011-gettyimages-635219853.jpg\" alt=\"Cortina's Lake Misurina hosted the speed skating events that year, the last to be held on natural, uncovered ice in the Winter Games.\" class=\"image_expandable__dam-img image_expandable__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_expandable__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"3332\" width=\"2500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfgac3y00123b6s60yf6vvi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As the world warms, the pool of potential locations for the Games is shrinking rapidly.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfgapag001a3b6sd2yvxcg2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 2024, scientists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/13683500.2024.2403133#abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">analyzed<\/a> 93 past and potential hosts for the Winter Olympics and Paralympics, focusing on whether they would have temperatures at or below freezing and be able to reliably deliver thick snow depths.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfgapag001b3b6sl4a4kwp8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            They found that even if countries live up to their climate policies and pledges, only 52 of these locations would be suitable for the Games by the 2050s.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfg8csy000s3b6s2faym59l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The situation is even more dire for the Paralympics, typically held later in the season in the same location. Only 22 sites would have reliable climate conditions by mid-century, the study found. If humans opt to burn more fossil fuels and increase climate pollution, that number drops to just four.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfgadzc00143b6sp7cmokv7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even in cities the analysis deemed \u201cclimate reliable,\u201d Mother Nature would need a helping hand, said Waterloo\u2019s Scott, an author on the study. By 2050, just four could likely host with natural snow: Niseko in Japan; Terskol in Russia; and Val d\u2019Is\u00e8re and Courchevel in France.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfgadzc00153b6shvj31irb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Unless we address climate change, \u201cthe possibility of having Winter Olympics is literally melting away,\u201d said Kaitlyn Trudeau, senior research associate for climate science at Climate Central.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfgan8z00183b6sgu4pslwd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A dearth of snow is the most visible sign of our fast-changing winters.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfgccvo001i3b6s6k5na6p2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Much of the western US has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/09\/climate\/snow-drought-west-water-colorado-river\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">languished in snow drought<\/a> this winter due to unusually warm temperatures \u2014 meaning a slow start to the ski season and fears for summer water supplies. Salt Lake City, set to hold the 2034 Winter Olympics, saw just 0.1 inches of snow in January, more than 30 below average.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfgccvo001j3b6szm2aa11c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Snowpack in most of the Northern Hemisphere has shrunk significantly over the past 40 years due to climate change, according to a 2024 Nature <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-023-06794-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study,<\/a> which found the sharpest declines, between 10% to 20% a decade, in the Southwestern US and large parts of Europe.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/04-soldier-hollow-utah-jan-2026-2.jpg\" alt=\"A cross-country skiing event at Soldier Hollow Nordic Center in Midway, Utah, in January 2026.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"3600\" width=\"2400\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfgcb0i001g3b6s5j6bhl0q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The relationship between warming temperatures and snow decline is not linear. Everything can seem OK until it very much isn\u2019t, said Justin Mankin, a climate scientist and associate professor of geography at Dartmouth College and an author of the study.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfgcvcc001s3b6s5qpvx9bh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Once average winter temperatures hit minus-8 degrees Celsius (17 Fahrenheit), snow loss accelerates rapidly even with modest increases in warming, the researchers found. Places can quickly fall off a \u201csnow-loss cliff,\u201d they said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfgctjf001q3b6s4t47ysvw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Where Mother Nature fails to provide snow, human technology can step in \u2014 to a point.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfgdi48001y3b6swy3yixqh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Manufactured snow was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guinnessworldrecords.com\/world-records\/first-olympic-use-of-artificial-snow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">first used<\/a> at the 1980 Games in Lake Placid, New York. Beijing, which held the 2022 Winter Olympics, relied almost entirely on snowmaking.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfgdi48001z3b6s79u62wwy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For this year\u2019s Olympics, organizers said they will make nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/milancortina-winter-olympics-climate-628ab56e90e89bc02a8a051fee89589a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2.4 million cubic meters of snow<\/a>, requiring around 250 million gallons of water, enough to fill nearly 380 Olympic-sized swimming pools.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfgdi4800203b6s2w0alhil@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But even this technology has weather-defined limits. In December, temperatures were so warm, venues could only produce snow during the night, International Ski and Snowboard Federation president Johan Eliasch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sports\/pressure-builds-milano-cortina-organisers-amid-climate-concerns-funding-issues-2025-12-23\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told Reuters<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfgdi4800233b6skv6idjab@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Critics also point to the high energy and water needs of snowmaking, which risk exacerbating the very problem it\u2019s trying to solve.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfgdi4800243b6ss746xozp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Snowmaking specialist TechnoAlpin, which is supplying this year\u2019s Winter Olympics, said technology has advanced significantly over recent decades, reducing energy demand and water consumption. \u201cThe water used for snowmaking remains entirely within the natural water cycle,\u201d a spokesperson told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfgdi4800253b6sk8ca62ci@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For Scott, snowmaking is an important adaptation, it just needs to be as sustainable as possible. \u201cAbandoning snowmaking would result in a major increase in unfair and unsafe conditions for athletes, cancelled competitions and eventually a Winter Games without any snow sports,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfgdi4800263b6s5pad40gh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But for others, machine-made snow is a symbol of the fundamental unsustainability of the Winter Olympics.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfgdi4800273b6s39rqmslg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The emphasis should be less about how climate change is affecting the Winter Olympics and more about how the Games are affecting climate change, said Carmen de Jong, a hydrology professor at the University of Strasbourg. \u201cHow responsible is it still to force Olympic Games under climate change and waning water resources?\u201d she asked.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/2010-02-03t120000z-144645071-gm1e6240huz01-rtrmadp-3-olympics-vancouver.jpg\" alt=\"A truck transports snow to Cypress Mountain, the snowboarding and freestyle skiing venue for the 2010 Vancouver Games.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1436\" width=\"2500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfgdggc001w3b6svrpgcaod@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One proposal for adapting the Winter Games to a warmer world is to merge the Olympics and Paralympics, although this could make the event unwieldy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfge5vh002d3b6s9j6ulug1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Another option would be keeping the events separate but moving them earlier in the year.
