In a video shared by the Nolan Archives, the \u201cMarty Supreme\u201d Oscar nominee interviewed Nolan ahead of the screening and declared \u201cInterstellar\u201d his personal favorite among his own films.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThough my role is not enormous in \u2018Interstellar,\u2019 I think I was number 12 on the call sheet, this film came to me at a time in life, in my career, where things were certainly not set yet,\u201d Chalamet told the audience. \u201cAnd it\u2019s remained my favorite project I\u2019ve ever been in. It\u2019s the film I\u2019ve seen the most of, of all the films ever made in human history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tChalamet has <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2018\/film\/news\/timothee-chalamet-emma-stone-rejections-actors-on-actors-1203078910\/\">previously admi<\/a>tted he \u201cwept for an hour\u201d after watching \u201cInterstellar\u201d for the first time and discovering his role as Tom, the teenage son of Matthew McConaughey\u2019s Cooper, had been drastically cut down. He told Nolan ahead of the screening that his expectations for his role were distorted from the beginning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThis was a script [Nolan\u2019s brother Jonathan] wrote for Steven Spielberg,\u201d Chalamet reminded the audience. \u201cWhen I got the part, I googled the project. The original story was about a father and his son, so I thought, \u2018Oh man, I made it!\u2019 And then obviously they reworked it and young Tom was a smaller part, but that\u2019s okay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNolan interjected, \u201cNever believe what you read online!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs Chalamet and the audience laughed, Nolan explained how \u201cthe genesis\u201d of \u201cInterstellar\u201d started as a pitch from physicist Kip Thorne to Spielberg about \u201cdoing a science fiction movie about looking out into the greater universe with real science behind it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cRight after we collaborated on \u2018Dark Knight,\u2019 my brother got the job and went to work with Steven. I get to call him Steven. He\u2019s Mr. Spielberg to you,\u201d Nolan told Chalamet. \u201cHe worked on it for a lot of years. It had incredible ideas and moved through all these different iterations, but until Steven was ready to make it, whatever it is, it never quite got that momentum. Steven went off to do another film, so it became available.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNolan continued, \u201cI had a lot of conversations with Jonathan over the years and what he was doing and what his ambition was. I was excited by it. I was incredibly struck by his first act. I had been working on a time travel idea\u2026 things looking at time. I had half-baked projects that I hadn\u2019t committed to. When it became available, it was a case of me saying to Jonathan, \u2018How would you feel if I took this and tried to combine it with some of my ideas and change a bit with what it was?\u2019 He was fine with it. He could tell the spirit of what I was trying to do was to get to what he was initially excited about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cInterstellar\u201d opened in theaters in November 2014 and grossed $681 million worldwide during its initial run and scored five Oscar nominations, winning for best visual effects. But reviews for the movie were far more mixed compared to the praise Nolan had received for his \u201cDark Knight\u201d movies and \u201cInception.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cYou\u2019re trying to be polite. The film was received in a slightly ambiguous way,\u201d Nolan told Chalamet as the actor tried to broach the topic of \u201cInterstellar\u2019s\u201d rocky initial reception. \u201cIt was a little bit sniffy. Some of the responses were a bit sniffy from critics and a little from audiences. It made very good money around the world, particularly. There was a sense of people not quite being\u2026 it sounds egotistical to say they weren\u2019t ready\u2026 but they weren\u2019t ready for it from me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI had some producer anonymously say of me, \u2018He is a cold guy who makes cold films.\u2019 Then it sort of stuck on me for several projects,\u201d the director continued. \u201cThe reason I was attracted to my brother\u2019s first act is because it\u2019s about family and humanity, and it\u2019s deeply emotional. That\u2019s the film I wanted to make. It\u2019s a film that wears its heart on its sleeve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tChalamet told Nolan that \u201cit kills me you didn\u2019t feel that love right away,\u201d adding: \u201cThis movie makes me weep more than anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWhen you make a film on that scale\u2026 every screening we did as we were finishing the film, there would be somebody who would be in tears and deeply moved by it. That\u2019s enough,\u201d Nolan said. \u201cYou can\u2019t also ask the culture to immediately embrace something. It\u2019s asking too much in a way. If you talk to individuals who\u2019ve connected with the film in a really profound way, then you know it\u2019s there. You\u2019ve done your job. The rest is about the zeitgeist and where you fit in with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNolan said that it was \u201can incredible relief and a humbling thing\u201d when \u201cInterstellar\u201d proved a hit at the box office, even with mixed reviews. But \u201cthe project seems to touch people more and more year after year and sort of grows,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cFor years, people would recognize me somewhere and talk about \u2018Dark Knight,&#8217;\u201d Nolan explained. \u201cBut over the last 10 years it\u2019s become \u2018Interstellar.\u2019 It\u2019s a wonderful thing. We re-released it two years ago and it made $5 million. It\u2019s amazing the success it\u2019s had. It\u2019s incredibly rewarding. One of the strange things about directing is you immerse yourself in an obsessive way with a project. The worst response you ever get is when people say, \u2018Meh, it\u2019s okay. It\u2019s fine.\u2019 You\u2019d almost rather they felt something, either they passionately dislike it or passionately, obsessively fall in love with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tRegardless of the initial mixed reviews, nearly everyone could agree that a highlight of \u201cInterstellar\u201d was the scene in which Cooper watches <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MoLkabPK3YU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">years of messages<\/a> from his kids as they grow up. Chalamet recorded scenes for the sequence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWhen you were filming the messages from home, there was a particular thing where you were hitting a dark tone,\u201d Nolan remembered. \u201cIt felt too much for me. I didn\u2019t particularly like it. I told you about it and you went ahead and did whatever the fuck you wanted and carried on. But I was like, \u2018He knows what he wants to do and has an idea.\u2019 It wasn\u2019t about being stubborn. You had planned what you wanted to do. You planned your choices and you didn\u2019t want to abandon that on a casual whim for me. You wanted to test that and challenge that and see if I kept coming back, which I didn\u2019t.
