No one who trav\u00adels to Flo\u00adrence can help see\u00ading the\u00a0dome of the Cathe\u00addral of Saint Mary of the Flower. That\u2019s true not just because of its sheer loom\u00ading phys\u00adi\u00adcal pres\u00adence over the rest of the city, but also because of its impor\u00adtance as an achieve\u00adment in var\u00adi\u00adous kinds of his\u00adto\u00adry, from that of engi\u00adneer\u00ading to archi\u00adtec\u00adture to reli\u00adgion. Its sto\u00adry is told by art his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adans Beth Har\u00adris and Steven Zuck\u00ader in their new Smarthis\u00adto\u00adry video above<\/a>, which begins in the year 1417. At the time, Zuck\u00ader explains, Flo\u00adrence had a \u201chuge\u201d prob\u00adlem: the ground\u00adwork for its ambi\u00adtious\u00adly large cathe\u00addral had been laid a cen\u00adtu\u00adry before, but nobody knew how to build the dome for which its plans called.<\/p>\n

The assump\u00adtion, says Har\u00adris, was that \u201cby the time they had to build it, they would fig\u00adure out how to do it,\u201d a reflec\u00adtion of both the more relaxed speed of con\u00adstruc\u00adtion in the fif\u00adteenth cen\u00adtu\u00adry, as well as a pace of inno\u00adva\u00adtion that must have felt rapid\u00adly on the increase.<\/p>\n

Such a struc\u00adture had\u00adn\u2019t been built since the Pan\u00adtheon<\/a> in antiq\u00adui\u00adty, the out\u00addo\u00ading of which would, at least in the\u00ado\u00adry, con\u00adfirm Florence\u2019s recep\u00adtion of the torch of civ\u00adi\u00adliza\u00adtion from Rome. But none of the tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal tech\u00adniques could sup\u00adport a dome of this size, atop so high a tow\u00ader, dur\u00ading con\u00adstruc\u00adtion. Sal\u00adva\u00adtion even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly came in the unpromis\u00ading form of Fil\u00adip\u00adpo Brunelleschi<\/a>, an archi\u00adtect, sculp\u00adtor, and gold\u00adsmith with\u00adout much of a r\u00e9sum\u00e9 \u2014 but, cru\u00adcial\u00adly, with a deep under\u00adstand\u00ading of the Pan\u00adtheon.<\/p>\n

\u201cBrunelleschi real\u00adized that hemi\u00adspher\u00adi\u00adcal domes func\u00adtion in a self-sup\u00adport\u00ading man\u00adner if they\u2019re con\u00adstruct\u00aded out of self-sup\u00adport\u00ading con\u00adcen\u00adtric cir\u00adcles,\u201d Zuck\u00ader says, and his chal\u00adlenge was to use that knowl\u00adedge to build an octag\u00ado\u00adnal dome. This involved design\u00ading two domes, a thick inner one cov\u00adered by a thin out\u00ader one. Drop \u20ac30 on a tick\u00adet, and you can ascend the stairs through the inter-dome gap your\u00adself. There the walls reveal the her\u00adring\u00adbone brick pat\u00adtern that kept the struc\u00adture sta\u00adble; at a larg\u00ader scale, those bricks form struc\u00adtur\u00adal ele\u00adments, much like over\u00adsized ver\u00adsions of the stones used to build arch\u00ades since time immemo\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal. Regard\u00ading almost any pic\u00adture of Flo\u00adrence, your eye may go straight to the cathe\u00addral, drawn both to the dome and to the splen\u00addor of its oth\u00ader era-mix\u00ading archi\u00adtec\u00adtur\u00adal fea\u00adtures.
