Music is one of those things that are hard to put a price tag on. And yet our culture is obsessed with quantifying the success of our favorite pop stars by how many tickets they sell, records they break, and streams they rack up. At a time when finding success within the music industry is getting increasingly harder, these numbers help us see today\u2019s pop stars in a glorified light. (Spotify even has a running concept called Billions Club where it honors artists who have hit a billion-plus streams through their songs; stars like Bad Bunny, The Weeknd<\/a>, Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus<\/a>, and more have all been bestowed with the honor.)<\/p>\n So why in 2026 does the concept of an artist selling her masters feel so \u2026 sad? Recently, it was revealed that Britney Spears sold her entire musical catalog<\/a> to Primary Wave, a leading independent music publisher. While an official dollar amount hasn\u2019t been confirmed, it\u2019s reported to have been near the $200 million mark<\/a>, a ballpark close to what fellow superstar Justin Bieber sold his for just last year and notably one of the biggest catalog sales in recent years. They aren\u2019t the only (living) singers who have chosen this path; Justin Timberlake, Shakira, Bruce Springsteen, and more have also opted to release the rights to their musical work for generous lump sums of cash. The estates of late artists like Prince and Queen have also handed over the rights of their music\u2014business deals that we can only imagine would have figures such as Prince, respectfully, rolling over in his grave, considering his career-long dedication to encouraging artists to own their work. <\/a><\/p>\n Christopher Polk\/\/Getty Images<\/p>\n When it comes to Spears, however, even $200 million feels far too low, considering her impact and influence in not only pop music but pop culture at large. Her last album may have been released a decade ago, she may rarely leave the confines of her Los Angeles living room, and her Instagram dancing posts are the only real contact she has with fans these days, but the current wave of pop stars would be impossible to imagine without Spears coming first. Last year, stars like Sabrina Carpenter, Tate McRae<\/a>, and Addison Rae<\/a> (the pop icon\u2019s most faithful devotee) all paid homage to her over-the-top early-aughts fashion<\/a>. The presence of sultry, hush-hush whisper tones that have taken over the airwaves and TikTok from the likes of McRae and Selena Gomez are directly derivative of Spears\u2019s own famous (and maybe, at the time of her peak, unappreciated) tone. There\u2019s also so few artists who have a catalog worth holding close these days. Simply put, there are hardly any hitmakers like Spears anymore, with the exception of giants like Beyonc\u00e9 and Taylor Swift, and the latter famously just bought back her masters<\/a> after a years-long battle with entertainment exec Scooter Braun. These two women, of course, are specific instances where total ownership and having the upper hand works in their favor, considering the industry clearly orbits around them and their creative output. <\/p>\n The selling of Spears\u2019s catalog also signifies a fact that many fans of hers\u2014including myself\u2014have been in denial of in the years since she\u2019s stopped performing and freed herself from the constraints of the conservatorship<\/a> that took over 13 years of her life. Maybe this means she\u2019s really, truly done\u2014with the industry at large, the concept of celebrity, and the one thing that brought her joy being co-opted and corrupted by those around her: her music. <\/p>\n Nicholas Hunt\/\/Getty Images<\/p>\n It is worth noting that an artists selling off their current catalog doesn\u2019t instantly equate to it being the end. Justin Bieber just released his Grammy-nominated album Swag last year and is headlining Coachella in just a matter of weeks, and Shakira just completed the most successful global tour for a Latino artist in history<\/a>. They both are two talents who seem far from retirement. If Britney Spears wanted to pick up a mic and record or grace the stage again\u2014on her own terms\u2014there\u2019s no question that there would be crowds ready to welcome her to do so. And if not?
