{"id":286827,"date":"2026-02-12T03:28:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-12T03:28:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/286827\/"},"modified":"2026-02-12T03:28:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-12T03:28:08","slug":"mars-organics-are-hard-to-explain-without-life-nasa-led-study-finds-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/286827\/","title":{"rendered":"Mars Organics Are Hard to Explain Without Life, NASA-Led Study Finds : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 2025, scientists reported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/largest-carbon-molecules-found-on-mars-build-the-case-for-ancient-life\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the discovery of long-chain organic molecules<\/a> called alkanes in the ancient mudstones of  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/mars\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73083\" data-postid=\"192078\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Mars<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now, in a new study, a team led by Alexander Pavlov of NASA&#8217;s Goddard Space Flight Center argues that their inferred original abundance of these molecules, before millions of years of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-predict-how-long-humans-can-survive-radiation-on-the-moon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">radiation<\/a> destroyed much of them, is difficult to explain by non-biological processes alone.<\/p>\n<p>That does not mean that the detected alkanes are evidence of life on Mars; the conclusion relies on modeling how radiation breaks down organic material over time. However, the finding does suggest that the origin of these molecules warrants closer inspection.<\/p>\n<p>The interesting thing about the alkanes found in the Martian mudstone is that they could be fragments of long-chain fatty acids, which on Earth are produced largely \u2013 but not exclusively \u2013 by life.<\/p>\n<p>The initial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/curiosity-cracked-open-a-rock-on-mars-and-revealed-a-big-surprise\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Curiosity<\/a> sample showed alkanes at concentrations of around 30 to 50 parts per billion, which isn&#8217;t particularly high.<\/p>\n<p>Pavlov and his colleagues asked two questions: could there once have been more of them in the stone? And if so, where could they have come from?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_octopus_black\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Octopus-black-final-642x272.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" width=\"642\" height=\"272\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-190933 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Cumberland mudstone has been sitting on the surface of Mars, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1126\/science.1247166\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exposed to harsh radiation<\/a> for about 80 million years, which would have slowly broken down any organic material in the rock.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers drew on laboratory radiolysis experiments to estimate how quickly radiation would break down alkane precursors, arriving at a much higher original concentration of 120 to 7,700 parts per million (ppm).<\/p>\n<p>Then, they considered the non-biological deposition and formation mechanisms that could have put them there \u2013 processes that include transport from interplanetary dust, meteorites, atmospheric haze fallout, hydrothermal chemistry, and reactions such as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Serpentinization\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">serpentinization<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Even when combined, these processes were unable to approach the inferred original abundance of the molecules.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our approach has led us to estimate that the Cumberland mudstone conservatively contained 120 to 7,700 ppm of long-chain alkanes and\/or fatty acids before exposure to ionizing radiation,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/15311074261417879\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the researchers write<\/a> in their published paper.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We argue that such high concentrations of long-chain alkanes are inconsistent with a few known abiotic sources of organic molecules on ancient Mars.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/life-on-mars-perseverance-discovery-is-the-best-evidence-yet\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Life on Mars? There could be non-biological alkane formation pathways on Mars that we don&#8217;t know about, or something we don&#8217;t know about how radiation acts on organic molecules on Mars. Further research is required to fill in these blanks.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s been well established that Mars hosts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/life-on-mars-perseverance-discovery-is-the-best-evidence-yet\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">many different kinds of organic molecules<\/a>.
