{"id":288182,"date":"2026-02-12T21:28:17","date_gmt":"2026-02-12T21:28:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/288182\/"},"modified":"2026-02-12T21:28:17","modified_gmt":"2026-02-12T21:28:17","slug":"rba-governor-accused-by-senator-of-gaslighting-australians-on-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/288182\/","title":{"rendered":"RBA governor accused by senator of &#8216;gaslighting&#8217; Australians on economy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Reserve Bank governor Michele Bullock has fired back at Nationals senator Matt Canavan after he accused her of &#8220;gaslighting&#8221; Australians over the state of the Australian economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Bullock has also rejected repeated efforts by the federal opposition to pin the blame for rising inflation and interest rates on government spending.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Appearing at a Senate Estimates hearing this morning, more than a week <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-03\/rba-decision-to-raise-interest-rates-horror-scenario-outlined\/106300520\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106300520\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">after the central bank raised rates<\/a>, Ms Bullock expressed frustration at the line of questioning from some senators, saying she had answered similar questions for a week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I do want to inject one positive here, and that&#8217;s the labour market,&#8221; Ms Bullock said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I think everyone&#8217;s been focusing on the negatives, but we&#8217;re in this position because the economy is actually doing okay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It can&#8217;t grow really strongly because productivity is not growing, but the labour market is holding up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s still a little bit tight, and this is good news, and in fact it&#8217;s much better news than some other countries overseas have seen with their labour markets.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Senator Canavan disagreed with her view and it prompted a heated exchange.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think people are only going to get angry in this country if they&#8217;re gaslit into thinking the economy is okay, when their lived experience is absolutely terrible right now,&#8221;  he said.Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Bullock said she took exception to that comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I am not gaslighting anyone,&#8221; she replied sharply.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-11\/rba-deputy-governor-says-rba-not-criticise-government-policy\/106331502\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">RBA deputy governor defends central bank from critics<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">RBA deputy governor Andrew Hauser says central banks should not criticise normal government spending choices, but he wonders if Australia&#8217;s economy is more inflation-prone because it is so finely balanced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I have said that there are certain aspects of the economy which are doing well and one of them is the labour market, which is positive for people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Now I understand that some people are doing it tough. I do understand. (AAP: Lukas Coch)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Bullock said the <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-03\/reserve-bank-lifts-interest-rates-february-2026\/106298696\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106298696\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bank raised the cash rate from 3.6 per cent to 3.85 per cent<\/a> because demand from both the private sector and the public sector was higher than the economy could accommodate, causing inflation to spike in December.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;If you look at the difference between our forecasts in November, where we had inflation coming back into the band, and you look at our forecasts now, where inflation isn&#8217;t, the key difference there is not fiscal policy. It&#8217;s pretty much the same as it was in November,&#8221; Ms Bullock said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The key difference is private demand.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The idea that government spending is to blame for the economy overheating has been prosecuted by the federal opposition for weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Public spending part of demand<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Bullock has consistently refused to buy into that idea, which is supported by some private sector economists, notably Shane Oliver at AMP, but <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-03\/chalmers-must-move-beyond-denying-blame-for-rate-hikes\/106301560\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106301560\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rejected by Treasurer Jim Chalmers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In a note to clients on Tuesday, Dr Oliver said that while it was true that growth in government spending slowed down in the September quarter, while growth in private spending surged, &#8220;this ignores the fact that public spending is part of demand in the economy and its level is also very important.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-06\/rba-governor-refuses-to-blame-government-for-rising-inflation\/106313266\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">RBA governor grilled over rising inflation <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">RBA governor Michele Bullock has refused to blame the Albanese government for rising inflation, as a political fight breaks out in the wake of the bank&#8217;s rate hike.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;On this front, after many years since late last decade with real growth in excess of 4 per cent [per annum], public demand in the economy is still around a record 28 per cent of GDP, whereas in the 40 years prior to the pandemic it averaged around 22.6 per cent,&#8221;
