Taylor Sheridan’s Lioness is set to return for season 3, and the series has only aged well over the last couple of years since it arrived. The Taylor Sheridan universe of TV shows exited the tropes of the Westerns Sheridan made his name on when he created Lioness, sometimes titled Special Ops: Lioness.

Starring Zoe Saldaña, Laysla De Oliveira, and Nicole Kidman alongside a large ensemble of other notable actors, Lioness fits well within the lineage of Sheridan shows while standing out amongst the crowd. There is no shortage of ongoing Sheridan shows, but Lioness may be the most exciting one on the docket.

Lioness premiered on Paramount+ in 2023, with season 2 arriving a year later in 2024. The series is a spy thriller that follows CIA senior case officer Joe McNamara (Saldaña). Joe runs the CIA’s covert “Lioness” program, a team of all-female operatives who go undercover in the War on Terror.

In season 1, Joe recruits Cruz Manuelos (De Oliveira) to the team and begins training her for a deep-cover assignment. Kidman stars as Joe’s boss, Kaitlyn Meade, and in season 2, directs Joe and her Lionesses to infiltrate a drug cartel. The Lionesses must tangle with the thorny morality of their job as well.

How Lioness Is Different From Taylor Sheridan’s Other Shows

"Joe

Lioness is quite a different show in comparison to the rest of the Taylor Sheridan project. Lioness is the only Taylor Sheridan show to feature a primarily female cast. It’s a common criticism of Sheridan’s shows and movies that he doesn’t write women as well as he does men, and this is an attempt to fix that.

It’s also unique because the show seems to be getting better. Taylor Sheridan’s TV shows have a bit of a nagging problem in that they start great and then peter out over the next few seasons. Lioness, on the other hand, showed a marked improvement between seasons 1 and 2, and season 3 might be even better.

Lioness Season 3 Will Be The Most Ambitious Yet

Lioness season 3 was confirmed in August 2025, and filming for the series is set to wrap up sometime in March or early April 2026, meaning the season 3 premiere may not be too far beyond. While there hasn’t been any news regarding the plot of season 3, series co-star James Jordan shared an intriguing update.

According to the Two Cups actor, “the scale is even bigger” for season 3. The jump from season 1 to season 2 was already impressive, so season 3 will be plenty ambitious if it’s another step above. Most of the main cast is set to return for Lioness season 3 as well, a healthy sign for any returning show.
