But since then, barring the odd family update (his second daughter was born in 2025) and occasional tribute to a deceased <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/harry-potter\/\" id=\"auto-tag_harry-potter\" data-tag=\"harry-potter\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Harry Potter<\/a> co-star, his grid has been almost charmingly lackluster.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt seemed like a good idea at the time, I thought I\u2019d be good at it,\u201d the actor confesses. \u201cBut I\u2019m quite private. I\u2019m not creating very interesting content, I know that. So I just don\u2019t think it\u2019s a very good fit with me \u2014 don\u2019t expect much activity there!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt\u2019s a rather humble admission from one the lead and instantly recognizable stars of among the most famous film franchises of all time. But it\u2019s also a reflection of both Grint\u2019s personality and how he has traversed his post-Potter career since Hogwarts shut its doors. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t even feel that long ago,\u201d he says as he figures out the exact length of time since wrapping the final film. \u201cIts\u2026 nearly 16 years\u2026 it\u2019s insane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tEmma Watson may have gone straight into major movies, activism and \u2014 more recently \u2014 a sustainable gin company, while Daniel Radcliffe has charted a successful \u2014 and wonderfully eclectic \u2014 path on screen and stage. But the third member of the core Potter trio has had a much quieter time spent mostly out of the limelight, and deliberately so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe Potter years were an absolute constant,\u201d Grint says of making the eight Potter movies, which were in production for almost an entire decade from 2000 through 2010. It was an \u201cintense long period\u201d of work that made him \u201cappreciate not being on set\u201d and \u201creally value downtime.\u201d He has had a smattering of film, TV and theater projects since, but even the sporadic nature of these dwindled once parenthood beckoned. \u201cI love working, but I also just love being at home, hanging out and being a dad,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019m not ridiculously ambitious.\u201d Reluctant celebrity? \u201cOh, absolutely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThis period of low-profile calm isn\u2019t exactly about to come loudly crashing down, but Grint is now heading to the <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/berlin-film-festival\/\" id=\"auto-tag_berlin-film-festival\" data-tag=\"berlin-film-festival\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Berlin Film Festival<\/a> with chilling Finnish horror \u201cNightborn\u201d (something he says he should probably post about on Instagram). Ironically, the feature sees him play a father raising his newborn with his wife (Seida Haarla), this time not in North London but an isolated house deep in the forest (actually shot in Lithuania). It\u2019s clear from the off there\u2019s something not quite right about the baby, but it\u2019s something only the mum can see. Graphic in parts, \u201cNightborn\u201d may prove difficult to watch for some (the bloody breastfeeding scenes alone should make anyone wince).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWhen I first read the script, we\u2019d actually just found out that we were having a second baby,\u201d he says. \u201cSo it was very weird timing. But it\u2019s kind of life imitating art.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-variety-2020\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/202616114_1_ORG_81f557.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"667\" width=\"1000\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\u201cNightborn\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhile \u201cNightborn\u201d is steeped in Scandinavian mythology (something Grint also says drew him to it), there are also some real-life themes at play, notably the emotional impact childbirth can have on parents, especially mothers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt can be such an isolating and scary time,\u201d says Grint (who notes his first daughter was born during COVID). \u201cThere\u2019s this palpable fear you have at the time where everything\u2019s scary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tGrint plays the jolly upbeat dad with aplomb, but admits it was something that came naturally. \u201cThat was just kind of me, really,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019m an optimist. Whatever\u2019s going on I try to make it light. Not panicking and staying calm is definitely something I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cNightborn\u201d marks Grint\u2019s first film since 2013\u2019s M. Night Shyamalan apocalyptic psychological horror \u201cKnock at the Cabin\u201d which was his first in almost a decade. Meanwhile, on TV, he had a main role in Apple TV\u2019s \u201cServant,\u201d the supernatural horror series also from Shyamalan (and, like \u201cNightborn,\u201d involving a baby).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tGrint admits that this recent shift towards genre may well a subconscious a push-back against his most high-profile role. \u201cIt does go against the warmth of Ron,\u201d he says. Next up, he\u2019s just started shooting \u201cEbeneezer: A Christmas Carol,\u201d playing Bob Cratchit to Johnny Depp\u2019s Ebeneezer Scrooge and in a  festive tale that will no doubt see its genre elements ramped up thanks to director Ti West.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhile Grint may now be easing into a more regular work rhythm, it\u2019s one at an exceptional casual pace, or \u2014 as he puts it \u2014 \u201cone thing every year.\u201d But he\u2019s only choosing projects he think will be fun or interesting. It\u2019s a very luxurious position to be in, one he freely acknowledges is down to the financial security already afforded to him by \u201cHarry Potter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m very aware of that privilege,\u201d he says. \u201cIt was hard work, but those movies have allowed us to pick and choose, which is just such a gift. Obviously it doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re always going to choose the right thing. But I do feel very lucky for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tGrint\u2019s latest film lands just as a group of young actors are following in his footsteps and may well find themselves with a similar level of privilege in a decade or so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShooting on the first season of HBO\u2019s high-profile \u201cHarry Potter\u201d TV series is now underway, with three kids plucked from obscurity to play Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, just as Radcliffe, Watson and Grint were more than a quarter-century ago. Grint wrote a letter to Alistair Stout, the youngster stepping into Ron\u2019s scuffed school shoes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWhen they were announced, it really took me straight back to \u201999,\u201d he says. \u201cBecause it was such an exciting time. I do wish them all the best \u2014 it\u2019s such a fun journey. But it\u2019s quite strange and surreal. But it really didn\u2019t feel that long ago that we wrapped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs for advice to the kids, Grint acknowledges that he \u201cdidn\u2019t have social media\u201d to deal with, so it\u2019ll likely be a very different experience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s a long time, and there are definitely period where you want to get out it,\u201d he admits. \u201cIt\u2019s a sacrifice, especially when you\u2019re young. But I have no regrets.
