The Simpsons<\/a>, which airs its 800th episode on Sunday, February 15<\/a>, has already been renewed through Season 40<\/a>, meaning your favorite Springfield family will stay on TV for years yet. But when the animated Fox<\/a> hit does end, don\u2019t expect a sentimental final episode. In fact, The Simpsons is \u201cnever going to do a series finale,\u201d according to showrunner Matt Selman<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe did an episode about a year and a half ago that was like a parody of the series finale. We jammed every possible series finale concept into one show, so that was sort of my way of saying we\u2019re never going to do a series finale,\u201d Selman told TheWrap<\/a> in a recent interview. \u201cWe did a series finale in the middle of the show that made fun of all the ideas of wrapping everything up or ending.\u201d<\/p>\n

That series-finale fake-out came in the Season 36 opener, \u201cBart\u2019s Birthday,\u201d which featured a slew of celebrity guest stars<\/a> in an episode that seemingly had beloved characters moving on from their Springfield existences<\/a>. But of course, everyone was back in town the week after.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe show isn\u2019t supposed to change,\u201d Selman added. \u201cThe characters reset every week. It\u2019s like Groundhog Day<\/a>, but they don\u2019t know it \u2014 and they don\u2019t die that much. If the show ever did end, there\u2019s no finale, it would just be a regular episode that has the family in it. Probably a little Easter egg here and there, but no \u2018I\u2019m going to miss this place.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Selman, who joined The Simpsons in 1997 and became sole showrunner in 2024, said the show\u2019s writers and producers have tried to make each of the 800 episodes so far \u201cits own amazing little mini movie that stands on its own and is original from the other 799.\u201d<\/p>\n

That includes the milestone 800th episode, this Sunday\u2019s \u201cIrrational Treasure,\u201d in which Marge\u2019s efforts to get the family dog in better shape include enrolling Santa\u2019s Little Helper in the National Dog Show. After arriving in Philadelphia for the event, however, Marge, Homer, and Santa\u2019s Little Helper get mixed up in a historical conspiracy adventure worthy of a National Treasure<\/a> movie, Fox says.<\/p>\n

And the episodic nature of The Simpsons helps explain why it\u2019s been on the air since 1987. \u201cWe\u2019ve done 800 episodes, and I\u2019m really glad we didn\u2019t do a big overarching story,\u201d Al Jean<\/a>, executive producer and former showrunner, recently told the Associated Press<\/a>. \u201cYou always return to square one at the end of the show. And there\u2019s no question that was a big influence on the longevity.\u201d<\/p>\n
