The vision board gave Miller a good idea of the vibe the filmmaker was going for as she brought her longtime obsession with Emily Bront\u00eb\u2019s classic 1847 novel, \u201cWuthering Heights,\u201d to life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFennell cast <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/jacob-elordi\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jacob-elordi\" data-tag=\"jacob-elordi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jacob Elordi<\/a> as Heathcliff and <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/margot-robbie\/\" id=\"auto-tag_margot-robbie\" data-tag=\"margot-robbie\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Margot Robbie<\/a> plays Cathy in this tale of childhood friends turned tortured lovers, kept apart by heartbreaking misunderstandings and their own destructive decisions. When Cathy breaks her ankle while spying on their new neighbor, Edgar Linton (Shazad Latif), and his ward, Isabella (Alison Oliver), she ends up staying at Thrushcross Grange, and Edgar becomes besotted with her. Cathy, who\u2019s gotten a taste of the luxurious life, decides to marry Edgar, although her heart really belongs to Heathcliff. When Heathcliff overhears Cathy telling her maid Nelly (Hong Chau) \u201cit would degrade me to marry Heathcliff,\u201d he  He doesn\u2019t hear the rest of the conversation about how much she loves him, so he leaves town, and Cathy finds herself in a loveless marriage. That is, until Heathcliff returns to stir things up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFennell\u2019s script was detail-laden, which helped Miller create the looks that would tell a story of jealousy, vengeance and lust. Robbie had more than 35 hairstyles for Cathy alone \u2014 and, in true Fennell style, \u201cVagina braids\u201d and \u201cJesus Elordi\u201d were some nicknames for some of those creations. Miller breaks down how the film\u2019s hair and makeup told its own story, and why Robbie didn\u2019t wash her hair for one key scene.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cJesus Elordi\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-variety-2020\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/WHE-01464.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"683\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tJaap Buitendijk<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhen Heathcliff (Owen Cooper) is brought to Wuthering Heights as a boy, he\u2019s a scruffy and dirty orphan. As he grows older, and Elordi\u2019s version of the character is introduced, Miller rubbed the actor in dirt and even added fake blood to make him look bedraggled. \u201cHe\u2019s grown up in the stables, and he should be unkempt. He\u2019s going to hide slightly behind his hair,\u201d Miller explains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOver the course of the movie, she had two looks for the actor: \u201cIt was \u2018Jesus Elordi\u2019 and \u2018Darcy Elordi\u2019 as Emerald and I mockingly called it,\u201d she says about Heathcliff\u2019s eventual transformation into a clean-shaven gentleman. \u201cReading the script, [the long-haired look] really rang out. I had the pleasure of knowing Jacob before [from \u2018Saltburn\u2019]; I asked him, \u2018Can you just grow everything?\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAnd he did. \u201cHe comes back a couple of months later and he\u2019s grown this amazing beard,\u201d Miller recalls. \u201cWe went, \u2018Wow! This is phenomenal! We\u2019ve got to try and keep the beard.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut it wasn\u2019t going to be so simple as letting Elordi rock his natural scruff. Why? As is typical of moviemaking, Heathcliff\u2019s arc wouldn\u2019t be shot in order. Nevertheless, Miller persisted. \u201cI was really, really keen to make that work. So I had to convince Emerald that I could recreate the beard in the Moors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFortunately, she had recently trained with makeup and prosthetics artist Roberto Pastore to learn how to recreate Elordi\u2019s real beard by laying on every individual hair by hand. But, the fake facial hair had to be strong enough to withstand the strong wind and rain planned for the production, so Fennell tested Miller\u2019s handiwork before filming began.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt was a very kind of nail-biting [experience], and Emerald, outside the studio at Elstree, got the effects guys to hose him with, I likened it to a water cannon with a Rolls-Royce engine,\u201d Miller says. \u201cI said, \u2018Please stay on. Please stay on. Please stay on.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cDarcy Elordi\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-variety-2020\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/rev-1-WHE-T1-0014_High_Res_JPEG-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"561\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs mentioned, when Heathcliff finally returns after a five-year absence, he is no longer scruffy and unkempt. He has suddenly come into money and has a new suave look, nicknamed \u201cDarcy Elordi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI thought I can just create that style for the Darcy look with him,\u201d Miller says, referencing the iconic character from Jane Austin\u2019s \u201cPride and Prejudice.\u201d \u201c[Jacob] has great hair to work with and the sideburns. We just knew it was going to suit him, and he would look amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tYoung Heathcliff is missing a tooth, so when Heathcliff returns, Miller worked with prosthetic dental appliance creator Chris Lyons from Fangs Effects in the UK to fill the gap. \u201cHe made an overlay, an 18-karat gold tooth, and just slotted it over Jacob\u2019s tooth. When he sat around the table in the dining room, and he\u2019s smoking the pipe and smiles, you just see that little sparkle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe Vagina Braid<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-variety-2020\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Wuthering-Heights-Vagina-Braid-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"683\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs detailed as Fennell\u2019s script was, the \u201cVagina hair\u201d was not written in. But having worked with Fennell on \u201cSaltburn,\u201d Miller says, \u201cThere were talks of vagina early on,\u201d so she wasn\u2019t shocked when the conversation came up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMiller worked closely with production designer Suzie Davies, who said, \u201c\u2018When we get back to Wuthering Heights, there\u2019s going to be this big fissure in the wall where the house is falling apart, and it\u2019s a vagina.&#8217;\u201d In another scene, Isabella is given a gift for Christmas, and it\u2019s a pop-up book; metaphorically, it resembles a vagina. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMiller followed suit: \u201cI\u2019d seen something reminiscent of this style in my search \u2014 this plait at the back of the head. I thought, \u2018If I make it smaller and we dress the hair around it.\u2019 We just called it a \u2018Vagina plait.\u2019 That\u2019s what\u2019s great about working with Emerald, you show her things, \u2018Oh, vagina plait. Yes, I love that.\u2019 And we gave the hairstyles names. We really spur each other on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDoll Braids<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-variety-2020\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Wuthering-Heights-Costume8054.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"1024\" width=\"683\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhen Cathy moves into Thrushcross Grange after her injury, Miller needed to demonstrate a passage of time so that when she returns to Wuthering Heights, there\u2019s a visible transformation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s the softest, and it\u2019s the most subtle,\u201d Miller says of Cathy\u2019s new look. \u201cThere are ribbons in there, and they match the ribbons on the rose dress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhen she returns to the Grange after marrying Edgar, Isabella\u2019s ribbon room has become Cathy\u2019s dressing room, where she\u2019s told all the dresses are made to her measurement. Then, she\u2019s shown her bedroom where the wallpaper matches her skin \u2014 freckles, moles and veins all included.\u201d Isabella also tells her, \u201cThere\u2019s hair that I\u2019ve taken from your hair brush that actually is around the top of the bed, and underneath the pedestal tables.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIsabella, who has led a sheltered, almost na\u00efve life, shows Cathy to her dollhouse to present her with a doll, with braids from Cathy\u2019s hair. \u201cIt\u2019s a corset braid,\u201d Miller says of the hairstyle, because of the way the ribbons tie at the bottom together like a corset. \u201cThe look on Cathy\u2019s face is disturbing, and so begins this endless round of dress up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIsabella has a doll version of herself, too, of course, which captured the way her style compared and contrasted with Cathy\u2019s. \u201cThe brief there was that she\u2019s childlike, she\u2019s naive, and Emerald wanted her to have this long, fabulous hair, but it had to be kind of frizzy. It had to be kind of wild,\u201d Miller says. \u201cIt had to be adorned with these wonderful headdresses, but sort of in contrast to Cathy, who has the silky, straighter, long hair. she wanted to show [Isbaella] as this very doll-like kind of innocent girl, and quite kooky with the little glasses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAt this point, Cathy and Isabella are both bored. \u201cWe can see that when [Cathy\u2019s] sticking the finger in the fish in aspic. It\u2019s all very wonderful, but it\u2019s not where she wants to be. And so it was the hairstyles had to show that,\u201d Miller says. \u201cIt\u2019s really about trying to show as many emotions and as many stages of the story arc as possible, and hair really sings out, and says so much about people and where they\u2019re at and what\u2019s going on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-variety-2020\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/rev-1-WHE-FP-0126_High_Res_JPEG-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"554\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tAlison Oliver\u2019s wild, frizzy locks contrast Cathy\u2019s sleek braids.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<br \/>Freckles and Horns<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe Yorkshire Moors are Cathy and Heathcliff\u2019s playground as young children, and, as adults, a place where they can be alone, so Miller added a subtle detail: freckles. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThey\u2019re exposed to the elements, so they\u2019ve got flushed cheeks,\u201d Miller explains. \u201cLittle Cathy (Charlotte Mellington) has freckles, which we then see on the older Cathy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Miller worked with prosthetic designer Waldo Mason, who scanned both Mellington and Robbie to produce a vacuum-form mask. \u201cI mapped out freckles onto both Charlotte and Margot, and I was able to translate those,\u201d Miller says, noting that she used a bespoke mixture of durable makeup by Skin Illustrator so she could recreate the freckles in the same way every day and do it quickly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMiller says, \u201cNo matter what I was doing in this, apart from the freedom to come up with a lot of looks, I knew that what I had to do was also do it quickly, because it was a 51-day shoot, it\u2019s not an infinite amount of time. It was a hell of a lot to do. So the pressure was to come up with as much as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHowever, as Cathy finds herself indoors more often at Thrushcross Grange, the freckles become less prominent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhat does change is her hair. Heathcliff\u2019s return prompts Cathy to have a more severe look, so Miller put the character in victory rolls, which she nicknamed \u201chorns. The horns allude to the cat-and-mouse game she and Heathcliff play, almost as if she\u2019s taunting him. Miller was inspired by Vivien Leigh\u2019s \u201cGone with the Wind\u201d look, as that character, like Cathy takes a twisted turn.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-variety-2020\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/WHE-02622.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"683\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tJaap Buitendijk<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tCathy\u2019s Death Look<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn Fennell\u2019s adaptation, Cathy dies of sepsis poisoning. She\u2019d been pregnant with Edgar\u2019s child amid her affair with Heathcliff, but after breaking things off with her lover, Cathy one day declares the baby has died inside her, and her health begins to deteriorate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cEmerald said that she wanted the skin to look like wet concrete and to have that tone about it,\u201d Miller says of Cathy\u2019s bedridden look.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhen audiences first see the sepsis on her legs, Miller says, \u201cEmerald was keen that we should try and portray that as accurately as possible.\u201d She adds, \u201cEmerald and I had a meeting with medical advisor, and I\u2019ve done a lot of research into how that can look, and so that was taken from real reference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMason, who had made the freckles, also made a decal for that look. \u201cI punched it up a bit, and then it was a case of a couple of us just placing them together, sort of bit like a jigsaw down the legs, and then free-handing in between to kind of match it all up,\u201d Miller says. \u201cMargot wouldn\u2019t wash her hair for us, just letting it go in great contrast to everything that we\u2019ve had before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn an effort to save Cathy, doctors place leeches over her body in hopes of removing the bad blood. Those were created by the art department. \u201cThere was an army of us spticking them in place,\u201d Miller says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt\u2019s an impactful shot when Heathcliff arrives at Thrushcross Grange and learns she has died. When he gets into the bedroom, Cathy is lying on the bed, covered by a sheet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cHeathcliff comes in and pulls the sheet back, and the contrast between his very livid face \u2014 because you can see the exasperation and the flush on his face, cheeks and the sheer desperation that upset everybody,\u201d Miller says. \u201cHe\u2019s so alive.
