\n\tPARIS \u2014\u00a0Christian Astuguevieille, who channeled Comme des Gar\u00e7ons<\/a>\u2019 avant-garde aesthetic into unconventional olfactive creations, has died at the age of 79.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt is with profound sadness that we have learnt\u00a0of the passing of Christian Astuguevieille, a multidisciplinary artist and a great innovator in the perfume industry and creative director of Comme des Gar\u00e7ons Parfums<\/a>,\u201d the house said in a statement Monday evening. \u201cHe is, and will remain, a pillar in the creation of our perfumes, which he developed in synergy with Rei Kawakubo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAstuguevieille passed away in Paris on Feb. 13.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe and Kawakubo, who founded and designs Comme des Gar\u00e7ons<\/a> fashion, began developing \u201canti-perfume\u201d perfumes together from the outset. In 1994, he and the designer, the creator of perfume bottles and outer packaging, came out with Comme des Gar\u00e7ons Eau de Parfum, which is now aptly referred to as The Original.<\/p>\n

\n\tMany other maverick ideas and fragrances ensued thereafter, including \u201cpebble bottle\u201d scents and limited-edition \u201cpebble events.\u201d Series kicked off in the late 1990s, starting with Leaves, which included Calamus, Lily, Tea, Mint and Shiso, to give the conceptual idea of various leaves. The series Red was about things with that color \u2014 think Carnation, Harissa, Palisander, Rose and Sequoia.\u00a0Incense became an olfactive journey through various faiths.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Odeur pillar is made up of fragrances such as Odeur 53, Odeur 71 and Odeur du Th\u00e9\u00e2tre du Ch\u00e2telet, and characterized by Kawakubo specifically as \u201canti-perfumes.\u201d The most recent, Odeur 10, has been described as a chemical composition of clean. For that, Astuguevieille chose to work with hydrogen peroxide.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe also created scents for the World of CDG fragrance<\/a> pillar, and collaboration scents, including with Monocle and Max Richter<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAltogether, Astuguevieille created for Comme des Gar\u00e7ons northward of 90 perfumes and 115 stockkeeping units.<\/p>\n

\n\tAstuguevieille was born in Paris in 1946. Working across art, design and fashion, he always believed that perceptions should be challenged. His creations melded innovation, artistic sensibility and a strong connection with the environment.<\/p>\n

\n\tAstuguevieille met Kawakubo in 1991 to collaborate on showcasing his sculptures in the Comme des Gar\u00e7ons Aoyama store in Tokyo. That\u2019s when he became the brand\u2019s creative director for fragrance<\/a>. Their first perfume came out three years later.<\/p>\n
