While most of Dan Trachtenberg\u2019s \u201cPredator: Badlands\u201d takes place on a deadly planet named Genna, the earliest part of the film unfolds on the Predator homeworld of Yautja Prime.<\/p>\n

In those scenes, the main character of outcast runt Dek (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi) must pick a planet from a list of candidates to serve as a proving ground for his hunting skills, with Genna being the most deadly.<\/p>\n

It turns out the sequence originally ran a little longer and featured more planets \u2013 including ties to the franchise and to the post-credits scene in the animated \u201cPredator: Killer of Killers\u201d film in which Arnold Schwarzenegger\u2019s Dutch, Danny Glover\u2019s Mike Harrigan and Amber Midthunder\u2019s Naru were being kept in cold storage on Yautja Prime.<\/p>\n

Speaking with Screen Rant<\/a> recently, Trachtenberg confirmed that references (visual and vocal) to them, the \u201cAlien\u201d xenomorph, and a major creature from \u2018Killer of Killers\u2019 were all scrapped. He says the scene \u201cgot truncated\u201d to the point that audiences \u201ccould barely see\u201d any of the characters \u2013 sacrificed to shorten an otherwise lengthy dialogue scene:<\/p>\n

\u201cThey had a longer conversation, or they said the same idea of \u2018Pick Your Planet,\u2019 and all that stuff, but it was a little bit longer. So there were more holograms to be in the background. And what we have now is more soft focus in the foreground, you kind of see it and all that.<\/p>\n

The thing we haven\u2019t gotten in all the great sci-fi we\u2019ve enjoyed over the years is that it\u2019s the creatures, it\u2019s their movie, that\u2019s it, no humans. And then, I had other cool thoughts for what Naru could do in the future and was like, \u2018Oh, that would be awesome for that.\u2019 But I could feel it.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s definitely a version where you find Naru on that planet, and she has to [survive], and they meet. I could see that version and didn\u2019t want to spend all the chips right away.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for where things stand, Trachtenberg says he\u2019s been thinking about the franchise\u2019s future:<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m in this zone of dreaming up more, like I said, as I had been previously. And then [a first look deal at] Paramount is this incredible opportunity to make original things that have been in my heart and mind for a long time. I\u2019m thrilled to have a place to make them theatrically. And they also have some very cool IP that I could now get to think about, like, \u201cOh, what might I do with that?\u201d So, it\u2019s a simultaneous thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPredator: Badlands\u201d earned $184.6 million at the worldwide box office, the best in the franchise to date, from a budget of $105 million.
