Zach Cregger will follow up his global hit Weapons with Resident Evil, a decidedly fresh take on the long-running franchise.<\/p>\n

Constantin Film CEO Oliver Berben tells Deadline<\/a> that the new film is \u201cfar away from everything that is connected to Resident Evil, only because Zach Cregger has his own style.\u201d<\/p>\n

When it came to entrusting Resident Evil with a new voice, Berben admits it was a no-brainer to give Cregger \u201ccarte blanche to do whatever he wanted to do with that IP.\u201d<\/p>\n

He adds, \u201cWith Resident Evil, we have had an incredible journey with one of the most successful international IPs of more than a billion dollars in box office for many years, and now we are creating something new \u2014 not just a new story idea, but to allow a new generation to take the IP into their own hands and form something different.\u201d<\/p>\n

These statements echo previous comments made by\u00a0Cregger, who\u00a0remarked<\/a>, \u201cI consider Resident Evil an original thing, and I think you will too when you see it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The filmmaker also stated<\/a>, \u201cI\u2019m definitely not trying to be completely obedient to the lore of the games. I\u2019m trying to tell a story that just feels authentic to the experience you get when you play the games.\u201d<\/p>\n

Directed by Cregger from a script he co-wrote with Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapters 3 and 4), Resident Evil opens in theaters on\u00a0 September 18 via Sony.<\/p>\n

Austin Abrams (Weapons), Paul Walter Hauser (\u201cBlack Bird\u201d), Zach Cherry (\u201cSeverance\u201d), Kali Reis (\u201cTrue Detective: Night Country\u201d), and Johnno Wilson (\u201cTwisted Metal\u201d) star.<\/p>\n

Constantin Film\u2019s Robert Kulzer, Vertigo Entertainment\u2019s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon, and PlayStation Productions\u2019 Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan are producing.<\/p>\n
